Will Councillor Cobb, responsible for environmental matters, be issuing a statement about the Council and dihydrogen monoxide?

It is probably also found in pasties.

There are mutterings growing within the Conservatives that in May there should be a change of Leader.

Three roads do not a town make ... I take your point about those areas but, in the main ... the not so central areas of Hove have deteriorated in keeping with the not so central areas of Brighton.

George Street, Blatchington Road, Church Road - all improved in my opinion. George Street would benefit from being completely pedestrianised though.
Now, how about a campaign to keep cyclists off the promenade in Hove - one young scallywag nearly ran me down last week!
Miriam Binder Posted - 29/09/2008 : 14:22:41
Driving along in the pre-joining days and for some considerable time after the joining you could see where the boundaries were even without knowing the streets. Mainly because Hove was so much better kept then Brighton; less potholes, better street lighting, less clutter on the roads ... all that has evaporated now and all the roads are looking, and feeling as unkempt!
flaming pie Posted - 29/09/2008 : 14:16:32
I much prefer Hove and Brighton to remain firmly joined. Trimmingham the scribe, also known as the sage bush of sussex is in agreement.

Here is a piece about Stonebridge School which is remarkably similar to the plans to demolish the Connaught Centre in Hove...

In what way??
Miriam Binder Posted - 17/09/2008 : 12:01:26
If Hove has any sense it will get out! This marriage between Hove and Brighton has only ever worked to the detriment of Hove!
Infinite Poppadum Posted - 17/09/2008 : 11:16:21
Councillor Ted Kemble is against separating Hove from Brighton - and he lives in Portslade!

He'll be out!

Oh good grief ... what is it this time that they failed to make provision for?
Infinite Poppadum Posted - 15/09/2008 : 10:44:36
How will the Council deal with the latest twist to the Falmer saga?

Uncanny echoes of the King Alfred. They suddenly find that it all needs to change radically as there has been a turn to events for which they did not make provision.

How much more last-minute "enabling" development will be needed to make it at all viable?

That decisive? More like she'd spend ages bickering with her other members of staff about what to do by which time the policies have all gone off and have to be thrown away. Of course, she'd then blame the 'previous administration' for supplying her with defective stock

Latest Homes now has a weekly column by greengrocer-turned-Council Leader Mary Mears in which she will tell readers about the wild and exciting world of Council decisions for the week ahead.

This column does not sound as if it is in fact written by her. She would be more likely to adopt a tone of, "come on, we've got four policies left here, clear all 'em all up for a pound!"

The Council and the Mayor, who went to a Gatwick ceremony, made much of the airline firm Zoom naming one of its planes after Brighton and Hove. This was going to give the city a boost around the world, blah blah blah...

Today, however, Zoom has gone belly up and left passengers stranded.

Wherever they are in the world, the passengers must now feel much the same the way as we hapless Portslade residents, who are are treated so casually by the Council.

Form a Port Sladé Society, just think of the wonderful topics you could discuss!
Infinite Poppadum Posted - 12/08/2008 : 14:33:12
Mrs Poppadum has heard that a Hove Society is being formed to discuss local matters over dinners and at other meetings as a result of disquiet over the King Alfred.

Presumably those of us in Portslade will not be invited to join!

The Council is promoting a performance by Holy Fuck, in Victoria Gardens, on August 16th. This does not sound very decorous but perhaps that is a sign of the new regime's priorities.
Control Panel Posted - 03/06/2008 : 22:20:33
Latest Homes says that former mayor Carol Theobald spent all day on public display in a bubblebath and also posed, in "an orange, daisy-trimmed bikini flanked by two oiled musclemen in skimpy briefs".

Even if this did nothing for the city's economy, it perhaps raised the "profile" of the place.

Anyone heard talk about Councillors from Goldsmid not attending meetings, by-elections and the like ?

Mary Mears from the London Road Open Market
is the new Council Leader for the Conservatives.

She was on ITV Local TV
and sounds very fair.
Miriam Binder Posted - 02/06/2008 : 09:27:09
I reckon our councils would be better of concentrating on the local residents and local needs rather then trying for all these grandiose schemes that are designed to be nothing more then money pits with a feather in their cap!

Liverpool Council, the worst performing in the country, had a £20 million shortfall on its European City of Culture, met by selling off care homes. It was always baloney that this City of Culture would be an economic "generator".

So many people ignore the chaotic Brighton Festival, anything more would have been unlikely to succeed.

Have you tried a Route 1 bus on a weekend ? - far from without passengers.

Portslade, Newhaven?

As the Phoenix craft has successfully landed on a previously unexplored part of Mars, I think we can reasonably deduce that NASA did not call upon Brighton and Hove City Council for advice.

Well spotted Tarner photo !
On the internet the photo is not shown.

The crafty Tories have put a photograph of mosaics at Tarner Park in City News with various people in front.

It does not point out that some of these are in fact Green councillors but leaves readers to think they are part of the unemployed...

From the council website :

You are here - home : your council : councillors & democracy : getting involved

There are a number of ways that members of the public can get involved in local government. These include:

* vote at local elections if you are registered;
* contact your local Councillor about any matters of concern to you;
* inspect a copy of the constitution and obtain a copy (NB there will be a fee payable for a paper copy of the constitution to cover printing costs, but you can also view the Constitution online.)
* attend meetings of the Council, the Cabinet, Individual Cabinet Member Meetings and Council Committees except where confidential matters (for example personal, financial or commercial information) are being discussed;
* participate in the Council’s question time and contribute to investigations by the Overview and Scrutiny Committees in accordance with the Council’s procedures;
* see non-confidential reports and background papers, and a record of key decisions made by the Council, the Executive and the Committees;
* complain to the Council about failure in services or maladministration;
* complain to the Ombudsman if you think the Council has not followed its procedures properly. However, you should only do this after using the Council’s own complaints process;
* complain to the Standards Committee if you believe that a Councillor has not followed the Council’s Code of Conduct;
* inspect the Council’s accounts and make your views known to the external auditor.
