Posted - 10/06/2007 : 19:23:19 "Of all the towns in England, Brighton is the one where I can honestly congratulate the Mayor, Corporation and officials for what they do to keep the character of the town and make it cheerful and welcoming." This is what John Betjeman wrote in the Spectator in 1956, and he said that the great Victorian churches of St Bartholomew's, St Martin's, St Michael's and St Mary's rose "like huge red battleships over the chimney pots and Georgian crescents".
What would he make of the Council in the quarter-century since his death, and in particular what would he have to say about the behaviour of Councillor Watkins who shirked the opportunity to cancel the grotesque King Alfred application?
The Election which soon followed this led to a substantial drop in the LibDem vote, especially that for Councillor Watkins, and the Greens - without any particular effort - were in hailing distance of ousting him.
As the next Election now begins as soon as the previous one has finished, it will be interesting to see what moves all the parties make in this key ward. Will the LibDems be so rash as to put Councillor Watkins up again?
As things stand, the Greens are set to take one if not two seats there especially as they have councillors upon all the Committees while the LibDems no longer merit a place on such crucial Committees as Planning.

Posted - 28/11/2008 : 19:17:42 Although the situation for Labour and the Tories is volatile, this poll shows that there is a continual trend for LibDem support to drop away. Elgood and Watkins are symptomatic of a party that people no longer trust.

Posted - 15/11/2008 : 18:47:22 The LibDems now say that the King Alfred should be run as a community trust. So why did they vote through at Planning committee an application which would have been the very opposite of that?
This certainly makes you wonder whether you can believe anything they say. |

Posted - 05/11/2008 : 17:27:56 The pleasure has soon been taken off Obama's victory by news that Elgood has gone to join the crowd in Chicago. What an opportunist. Obama would not be pleased to know about his and Watkins's duplicity over the King Alfred. |

Watkins is in fact just sitting it out as a councillor. His position is meaningless.
No change there then. He only ever really was a waste of space. |

Posted - 19/09/2008 : 15:48:33 What a hypocrite Councillor David Watkins is.
He is in the Argus's Inquisition today to say that Hove is suffering from Brightonisation . But he was the one who voted through the ghastly King Alfred proposal.
A complete and utter hypocrite. A good thing that the LibDems are on the way out here. |

If there's one thing he'd fight for, it's that. It looks as if the fight, such as it was, is going out of him. |

It will take more than that to clear up after the mess made of the ward by Elgood and Watkins. |

Posted - 17/08/2008 : 16:38:14 There was surprise at the Brunswick Festival that Paul Elgood did not show any interest in the Cuba Solidarity stall. Some say that he could do with some lessons from Havana in how to cling onto power for as long as possible. |

What sort of effort will the LibDems put into Hove? They are useless, of course, but that is not so widely known outside Brunswick.
Perhaps some Brunswick residents have not noticed. |
