Of course no Forum is complete without a little musing over the fate of this seafront site...

Not really conducive with the promotion of Brighton as a resort of destination for the day trippers though is it?
Daveb Posted - 01/08/2008 : 13:27:24
I am sure this has been said before.
Brightons road system is inherently flawed. All roads lead to a hub on the coast, therefore access and exit are limited. By making the road even narrower with build outs and bus lanes flow can only decrease.

This will only improve if less people travel in by car which is possibly part of an ultimate plan to rid the roads of B&H of all cars?

I agree with Martha Gunn's recent posts.

Somebody noted the silence from Fanshawe (probably now in his Scottish home town Edinburgh). However the 'delusions of grandeur' and the 'unworkable schemes' where obvious many years ago and well before the current economic circumstances. Where are the many people who without question supported this (and other) projects ?

Interesting that Gehry's recent comments about the Hove project are well documented but we still hear that they want him to redesign it.
Miriam Binder Posted - 01/08/2008 : 10:40:49
Sadly Martha I cannot do anything else but agree with you wholeheartedly. I wish it were different and that this was not only a place I called home but a place that called me home; rather then just a beacon to tacky seaside tourism, pretentious architectural posturing and inept public services.

Because Crawley does not have dellusions of grandeur and simply gets on with trying to provide decent services for its residents.

Brighton, on the other hand, believes itself to be the worlds #1 seaside resort - a culture that perpetuates itself right through Brighton & Hove Council.

This has resulted in millions spent looking at inherently unworkable schemes that has backfired now that the housing boom has ended. lets hope that when there is an economic upturn, there is a more realistic approach. Like, for example, building a brilliant leisure centre on the King Alfred funded by an acceptable, modern hosuing development within the site free of the whole Brad Pitt / Frank Ghery nonsense.

Its amazing that Brighton & Hove Council went all weak at the knees when a Hollywood actors name was casually dropped into the mix who, lets face it, probably couldn't point to Brighton on a map of the UK.
Isn't Brighton cheap and tacky still?

I do quite a bit of driving around in Sussex. I am continually struck by the mess that Brighton is when compared with other locations. Why is it that Crawley manages that which appears to continually elude Brighton?
nightowl Posted - 01/08/2008 : 09:57:03
No future for big developments in Brighton only bus lanes on the coast road, at the cost of £1.8 million what a disaster.
Most of these sites screaming out for development will just be left to be neglected for decades, who wants to invest in Brighton with its self inflicted transport and infrastructure failures.
Change of council is a must now, but who do we vote for in May?
B.O.B. Posted - 31/07/2008 : 12:36:15
Thank goodness for that at least. Anyone want to design a nice eco friendly sports centre for Hove Seafront. What about the guy who did the library.
Infinite Poppadum Posted - 31/07/2008 : 10:47:33
Mrs Poppadum says that the council is considering other plans for the King Alfred, and is just going through the motions with Karis but has no intention of continuing with that firm which has made the council's reputation all the worse.
Miriam Binder Posted - 30/07/2008 : 22:39:32
Brighton being all mouth and no trousers and Fanshawe all trousers and no mouth He has been conspicuous in his silence hasn't he.

(just as an interesting aside, when spellchecked 'Fanshawe' brings up the suggestion 'banshee' )
Martha Gunn Posted - 30/07/2008 : 22:13:45
Josh Arghiros is talking about 'sitting down with the council to disscuss the projects future'.

Given the underhand tactic employed by Karis which was aided by the Labour adminstration, I would hope that the Tory administration would bar Karis from ever setting foot inside a council building ever again.

This fiasco has cost the tax payer a huge amount of money, lined the pockets of consultants, deprived Brighton & Hove residents of sports complex that could rival (can you beleive it?) Burgess Hill & Crawley and exposed blatant corruption at work with the council. A particuarly mucky episode in Brighton & Hove's already murky government history.

A line should now be drawn under this with any new proposals for the site being drawn up on a much more managable level.

Yet again, this has exposed Brighton to be all mouth and no trousers. Where is Fanshawe these days?
Miriam Binder Posted - 29/07/2008 : 22:05:51
And we will not see one single penny back!
Daveb Posted - 29/07/2008 : 21:25:53
All the latest failed or delayed projects have put enough money into the hands of consultants, lawyers and council expenses to build at least one of them.
Miriam Binder Posted - 29/07/2008 : 21:16:28
Well, I cannot say I am surprised. Utterly disgusted at the amount of money this fiasco has cost us though.

Latest Homes has a page about "projects" still likely to go ahead but... the King Alfred is not mentioned.

Amongst the chaos that is now the Argus website (shameless copy/paste) :

Chance to grill King Alfred scheme building chief

12:10pm Thursday 17th July 2008

The developer behind the £290 million King Alfred scheme will be answering readers’ questions in the next Friday Inquisition.

Josh Arghiros, of Karis Holdings, hopes to bring life to Frank Gehry’s vision for a new King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove.

He will be sitting in The Argus hot seat answering questions on anything relating to the controversial development from 11.30am.

The long-awaited initiative includes more than 700 seafront homes and a replacement leisure centre and was approved by Brighton and Hove City Council last year. But its future was thrown into doubt when Mr Arghiros expressed fears an economic downturn could cause financiers ING to back down.

Still talk of 'Frank Gehry's vision'. No news from a recent visit to London reached the Argus ?

I'll do it for what he quotes minus 5%

Miriam Binder Posted - 16/07/2008 : 17:20:07
I wonder how much it wil cost us this time around?
Control Panel Posted - 16/07/2008 : 17:09:31
If Karis cannot build according to the plans for which permission was given, then it cannot have any claim upon the land.

Starting over...

From B.O.B. in the Well, the i360 is coming topic

Will the agreement with Karis become nul and void if Gehry has pulled out and this scheme doesn't get built or have Karis now got hold of the site for the remainder of the lease? What have the Councillors signed away?

Yes, where do the council stand (along with council tax payers money) now the love fest with Gehry is over ?
The whole thing was promoted on the basis of how wonderful Gehry is (was) and what this would do for Brighton ??
Planning permission has been given so what does that mean now ? A sports centre ? A swimming pool ? A block of flats ? A hole in the ground ?

Most new builds on brown field site will be flats because they are more profitable for devolpers.

At least at KA no work has started and IF, we are lucky then some good may come from it. I susupect however it will fall into neglect and becomes even more of an eyesore.

Whereas the 300 new flats being built in Saltdean have come to a stop, half built. This eyesore will remain for some time.
Luckily it looks like all the social housing will be completed. Deep Joy!
Miriam Binder Posted - 13/07/2008 : 11:13:37
Maybe Control Panel put two and two together and came up with four. Namely most new builds are flats - and rather high-rise flats at that.
Observer Posted - 13/07/2008 : 11:09:24
Dear Panel, you must have posted a different article to the one you described. This one doesn't once mention the word 'flats', it merely says that building is slowing down because of the mortgage squeeze. Nor does it say the Government is keen on high-density flats in particular, which would be untrue anyway hence the 'eco' towns.
Daveb Posted - 12/07/2008 : 18:46:32
Lets us hope a fix can be found that can regenerate the current building and facilties or build a new complex from council funds.
I am talking about a sports facilty, no flats.
In this time of impending depression the council needs to generate real jobs and I am sure all the parkings fines and cutting a few psuedo jobs in the council will help fund it.
Miriam Binder Posted - 12/07/2008 : 17:09:42
Oh yes ... I almost feel vindicated.
Control Panel Posted - 12/07/2008 : 16:32:21
This report states that there are too many flats for sale, and not selling. Especially "new build".

The Government has been insisting on high-density flats when English people do not want them.
