So, the idea is that we have a public square right there where refuse laden trucks are going to be turning the corner every 6 minutes or so into the proposed waste transfer station, we lose the only petrol station left in central(ish) Brighton.
Am I alone in thinking that the latter two issues aside, we've heard all this before? This smacks very much like another one of those Gehry moments ...

The Lewes road is one of the major arteries in and out of Brighton, it gets grid locked now before we build 500 houses and a thousand new jobs on the barrack sight.
The council have a big problem with the infrastructure of the area, to make such a large and dense development on this site a new back road from the Saunders park area Popes folly to the railway bridge in Hollingdean road needs to be built, even a new railway bridge may be required.
The road can exit out on to the Lewes road at the end of the barracks site by the University building.....
Some homes will be lost but remember 500 new ones will be built.... |

Too true. The layout encourages bully-boy tactics. I hate driving round it.
The Lewes Rd area is an impending urban disaster. An academic corridor! Don't make me laugh - it'll become more of a student ghetto than it already has become. Who wants to sit in a new square in middle of the worst air pollution Brighton has to offer? Ideas like this just make you want to put your head in your hands in utter bewilderment.
Just lucky there're not planning to routes loads of extra HGV's through the area. Oh, hang on a minute... |

Er, it was meant to be ironic. In an ironic sort of way. But I do remember you objecting about the King Alfred. As you well know, the residents there were overwhelmingly against the development, but for some strange reason their views didn't carry weight, except for other developments they do. What a surprise. |

I have decided to embrace change.
I have decided that it is simply not right to ever complain about a development again, because there are two sides to every story, and just looking at the facts leads to a loss of vision and diminishes my blue sky thinking. So for this development, I am going to take the view that houses need to be built somewhere, so why not here? Pelagia, you need to look at the bigger picture and get ready to accommodate a paradigm shift. Just because you can't see this doesn't mean it's not right for the Community (which in development terms appears to mean those who are not local and/or who are not negatively affected by the development). So stop whinging you NIMBY. |

I expect that give it another 5-10 years you will find that that block will be found to be substandard anyway and it will be demolished to make way for a block three times the height and possibly made of nice shiny glass to fit in with the Preston Barracks monstrosities   |

As far as I know a developer has been selected and the site is to contain 412 homes of which 40% will be affordable, 20,000 square metres of business space with an innovation centre and community facilities.
Oh yes, it is anticipated that it will create about 1,000 jobs though I cannot now recollect whether these are temporary/permanent or seasonal. Probably mainly in the construction industry as the preferred developers, a consortium of Wilson Bowden, CDHA (part of Hyde Housing) and Broadway Malayan Architects who will lead this groundbreaking, contemporary site

It may have escaped the myopic visionaries but there is a lot more to city life then café society. On the one hand this council is claiming to head a city that welcomes diversity and then it puts forward plans that would turn us into a homogeneous maess   |

Agree Nightowl. That area of Brighton also has the worse air pollution due to the amount of traffic. Something should be done about that by way of relieving pressure on traffic before they decide to tart up Saunders Park et all. |

Sounds like another over development with no supporting infrastructure to me.
The Vogue Gyrotory was a complete abortion from day one, it only encourages aggressive driving.
The barrack site doesn't need the railway station moving closer, it needs a back access road to relieve pressure on the Lewes road, when was a new road created in Brighton?
Rather than employing expensive consultants the councils should consult those that live and work in the Lewes road then we might get something more logical..... |
