LONDON (Reuters) - British regulators decided on Wednesday to permit in principle the creation of hybrid human-animal embryos for research into illnesses such as Parkinson's, Motor Neurone Disease and Alzheimer's.

I find this surprising given the generally negative attitude toward genetically altered crops. I guess all one can say is Moooo.

Safeguards can be circumnavigated or just simply ignored. But that isn't the point so much LTNS. More importantly is the fact that we are taking a step on a slope that will lead who knows where. Disease will never be eradicated .... |

I know this bit of news sounds like the plot of a horror/sci-fi story. It`s a nightmare for the ethics debaters too, and OK, it COULD be the thin end of several wedges. I admit I`m not really comfortable about it - but I`ll not declare against it, simply because we really don`t know enough about what is being done.
As for finding a cure for Parkinson`s Disease, yes that would be wonderful. A very nasty disease that could be eradicated. I`ve long held the opinion that diseases are a part of our evolutionary process. As fast as we eradicate one type, yet another becomes more prevalent, and not just those that are infectious. |

On a serious note, I would suspect there will be a lab somewhere that has already bred all kings of mutations in search of something more sinister.

This is not a problem it is a Very Early test (later it will be done with human eggs).

Be interesting to see if this does what it says on the tin, produce cures or treatments for the most horrible diseases we have on this planet.
But can't help feeling the pressure to get a treatment or drug on the market fast to earn income may override sensible safe guards.
Time will tell........
