Yes

Interesting too, if newspaper sales really are down because of this particular case. Is this correct, LT, or are they just down and folks suppose it`s down to the McCann story?

Isn't that the point ... no one knows. Except for maybe those that took part in this terrible tragedy. Speculation is rife and I don't think that it is helping anyone and certainly not Maddie.

won't help matters for whom exactly? for Madeleine? The McCanns have done their utmost to keep this on the front pages, vis having one campaign manager, then another... it is in their interest for this story to be kept in the public eye. If everyone forgot about it, and this was relegated to a non-story, same as is the case for all the other currently missing children that don't get one column inch in this country, they wouldn't be happy at all.

We all make mistakes, we all do things as parents that we regret... some get punished, others don't...

I made the 'mistake' of ending my marriage when my daughter was one, even if it was the right thing to do at the time - Six years later revenge is being exacted upon me by her mother, hence I haven't been allowed to see my daughter for 9 months now, and counting...

My point is that the punishment doesn't always fit the crime in life, least of all as a parent... and no-one knows for 100 certainty what crime if any the McCanns are guilty of...
Miriam Binder Posted - 19/09/2007 : 14:34:36
What it looks like to me so far is a tragedy of a family where the parents made a mistake and unlike many of the mistakes parents make on a daily basis while rearing their children, this family is paying the ultimate price by having as a result one of their children go missing.

What it further looks like to me is that all the armchair - oops sorry computerscreen detecting - is not going to help matters any and may indeed make matters much worse if they have not already done so.
Jus Posted - 19/09/2007 : 14:29:29
Hiya peeps - my first post here - saw a link in the argus forums from a Miriam Binder - and thought that this forum probably could prpbably handle yet another self opinionated waffler like me, so here goes, on the McCann topic...

Found it intersting that someone who has been working behind the scenes at a government department, the 'Central Office of Information', name of 'Clarence Mitchell', has stepped up to fill Justine McGuinneses role as 'Campaign Manager'... He was formerly the director of the Central Office of Information's media monitoring operation... Remember the 'Ministry of Truth' in Orwells '1984'? Parallels there maybe?

Anyway, he was seconded to oversee the Maddie case back in June... now that the McCanns are on the brink of being charged, off goes McGuinness and in comes Mitchell, wading in with a big press statement..

He attacked the "rampant, unfounded and inaccurate speculation of recent days".

He added that the McCanns were "innocent victims of a heinous crime" after Madeleine disappeared on 3 May from Praia da Luz, Portugal.

Mitchell, a former BBC journalist, said there were "entirely innocent explanations for anything the police may have found during their inquiries".

So then... lets tick off what has happened this week in total:

1) McCanns released without charge, come back to England

2) New Criminal solicitor appointed, one Michael Caplan QC, who fought efforts to extradite General Pinochet. He is probably the top Criminal solicitor in the country... the first non-Barrister to be made a QC I think?

3) Sir Richard Branson donates £100k to the funds needed to pay for the legal costs - Branson also asks other rich people to donate.

4) Campaign Manager 'resigns' and new Government taxpayer paid official appointed, issues statement saying that focus must be given to finding Madeleine.

For all the above to take place, you've got to agree that some pretty powerful strings have been pulled here.... does it not look to you from the above that someone in authority in this country knows something that we don't?

What makes Branson SO confident that he is willing to risk all his empires' PR cred on supporting the McCanns? How can he be THAT sure that they are not involved in Maddies' disappearance?

Similarly, for the Government to throw their weight behind this whole scenario, appointing a senior director in a government agency, to manage the McCanns PR, at our expense?

For Caplan to risk his legal reputation on a case such as this, where no-one 'apparently' has any knowledge of what REALLY happened on the night Maddie disappeared.

I would surmise that either:

1) They all know that she is in fact alive, safe and well

2) They know who the killers are, where Maddies' body is, and the McCanns are nothing to do with it...

You tell me, how does it look to you?

LT looks like you are judge and jury on this one whatever happened to good old fashioned British justice(or Portuguese justice even?)as livewire has stated in an earlier post please lets not have a trial by internet
long time no see Posted - 16/09/2007 : 17:21:07
And Branson
giving £100,000 to their Fund.
Typical of Branson
makes it's into a PR exercise.

What are we supposed to believe?
Miriam Binder Posted - 15/09/2007 : 17:43:32
Finding an impartial and non prejudiced jury would be difficult if not impossible.
NAZZ Posted - 15/09/2007 : 16:42:20
With all the media saying this hapened and that happened,if the McCanns end up in court on a charge would all the media hype
have an influencial impact on a jury?
Daveb Posted - 15/09/2007 : 08:18:27
Solid evidence, a body or finding her alive.
If it is the third, then there would be more questions to ask.
thedelboy Posted - 15/09/2007 : 08:04:56
Dave you are a terrorwell at least someone is trying to lighten up the atmosphere on this thread, livewire is correct there should only be one trial and that is with the judiciary not the internet!!it is a shame the media seem to have already made thier judgement!!how can a fair trial now be possible?
Daveb Posted - 13/09/2007 : 19:55:02
There is a new family car on the market.
Plenty of room for parents in the front, two kids in the back and one in the boot.

A very good point...we have television news channels here in Chicago like the local (cough) FOX station that run a telephone/text poll on hot topics like this ...it drives me bonkers to see thousands of people paying to record their vote on guilt or innocence by telephone. No facts presented...only the thirty second news read (with pictures if they will sell the story) I guess it does eliminate the need for a costly investigation and trial…as well as all the resources spent on courts of law, juries, judges etc..

Just thumbs up or down by those watching the tele…

It is indeed.

All that has really happened is that the McCanns have been effectively cautioned - much as I was when my car hit a child who ran into the road on Yarmouth seafront. Everybody who witnessed that, including an off-duty police officer, agreed that there was nothing I could have done to avoid the boy, as did the policeman who cautioned me. He had to caution me, and it was as much in my interest as anybody else's that he did.

That said, we should be extremely wary of any and all speculation on this case. I do not know that the Portuguese police investigating the matter have leaked anything (there seems little by way of solid confirmation), but we are all aware that the McCann family have been leaking like sieves, and that much we are hearing comes from that source.

What I am certain of is that the Portuguese police are desperate to recover the missing child, and that the constant drip drip of innuendo coming from parties directly interested in the matter must be wearing their patience extremely thin.

Ch4 UK News has Confirmed the Police

So now they are back in the UK

A UK Lab has given them special DNA help
on dried blood.

I hope they conclude this case soon.

Tut tut!

Always in trouble with the admins..

I think Dave put it best when he said "I do not trust the Portugese police, the media or the McCanns."

I get the feeling there will never be closure on this one.
long time no see Posted - 09/09/2007 : 18:49:30
Livewire : Note this is from tonights ITV News.
It is No way any such trial by internet at all.

Police in PraiaDa Luz
are aware that those parents used sedating pills
on their girl,
while they had their meal away from that room.

If an accident did happen
they need to tell the Police the truth.

It has now come to where you have to be in contact with your kids at all times or you are called a bad parent, so how come kids are out on the streets at all times of the day then? There is a lot of mud slinging going on by the self-righteous brigade who all know better but don't do better.......

Yes , it seems hysteria rules. This case (to my knowledge) has just now made news in the USA. I hope the young girl is found alive and well. Police always seem to come back to the parents when all other leads fail...because they are usually correct in doing so according to my neighbor a recently retired police detective. But they can be wrong...a truly terrible situation when you have lost a child and as a parent are then are blamed for that loss. ( I would already be feeling guilty about not protecting the child)
