Abortion is an issue that has many ramifications; emotional, psychological - both long and short term, physiological - again both long and short term, societal and familial.

Mary Stopes called the findings of the committee that looked at the future provision of abortion "a victory for science over thinly-veiled ideological hokum".

Though I am certainly pro-choice, I do not think that relaxing the pre-procedural requirements to be advantageous to anyone other then the purse strings of an admittedly already overstretched NHS.
quote:
There is no reason why women seeking an abortion should need the approval of two doctors, a group of MPs has said.

Here, here and here are some further articles and letters.

Quite, Mim. Wise words we should have applied much earlier in his career...

But...Tombstone has a point there, too. I used the terms `males` & `females`, because the former covers both women and girls, and males both boys and men. It`s not just me being lazy, it`s not just young teenage girls seeking abortions, and it`s not just young teenage boys that are the fathers. I`m sorry, but you can`t just call them `men`, when they`re old enough to reproduce but not old enough to shave. And it`s unfair to call a scared pregnant schoolgirl a woman.

Except that in some instances we are talking about boys rather then men and girls rather then women ... but okay.

Totally off-topic (but I don't care) - I'm becoming increasingly annoyed by this execrable modern habit of saying 'males' and 'females' instead of 'men' and 'women' -it sounds horrible. Any chance of reverting to the good old english terms, anyone?

The problem with the abortion issue is that it is regarded primarily as a female issue, as this thread and some of the respondents clearly demonstrate. Where as in fact it is an issue for all.
n/a Posted - 05/12/2007 : 22:22:03
No, it's to do with the female unable to take responsibilty for their actions.

I agree that females, even young teenage females, should take full responsibility for their own bodies...and SO SHOULD MALES!
It`s good that girls are able to be prepared by being the ones who carry condoms, rather than being at the mercy of the male to remember to obtain them, as used to be the case! However, it is still the male who will end up wearing the things, isn`t it?!
It isn`t just the contraceptive aspect, it`s the sexually transmitted diseases - simple, nasty chlamidia can cause sterility, ectopic pregnancy (which still KILLS too many women) and salpingitis - painful inflammation and scarring of fallopian tubes. I`d wish more young girls were aware of this as well as the risk of unwanted pregnancy, or the chance of getting a council house/flat!

As for downgrading abortion, I am strongly against the downgrading and cost-cutting policies in all aspects of health care, and this is no exception.
Also, "Prevention is better than Cure", in terms of physical and emotional pain, and also in terms of financial cost. This applies whether we are talking about pregnancy or pressure sores, and also diseases which can be innoculated against.
I agree with Miriam,

The secrecy appals me. Sadly though I can fully understand the need for secrecy considering the misplaced fervour of the anti-abortion campaigners.

Near on 200,000 abortions a year and Binder describes those that appose this as misguided in some way.

Describing another view as "misplaced fervour" reveals your prejudice.

Okay LTNS, having very nicely once again trawled your prejudices and misogyny all over this thread, lets get back to the topic at hand which is ... Lowering the threshold for abortion as a medical procedure.

What is out of date LTNS? Hoping that the male of the species is as accountable for his actions as the female of the species? I didn't realise that the male was such a tender little budling that needed protecting from himself. I, in my rather egalitarian way I'll admit, tended to assume that they, the male of the species, was as capable and self accountable as the female of the species.

FACT.

If the UK has far too many young girls getting 'knocked up' as you so charmingly put it, we seem to have a rather lot of males that do not seem to care where their seed goes.

The issue of youth pregnancy is not a single gender issue LTNS. The last time I looked it still took two, one of each gender.

No, young girls will not use this without their parents knowledge. Thank you Victoria! ... and it is not right that young girls should face abortion, even the quickie way, without the support and time that they need to understand fully what is happening.

Anger does not come in to this LTNS so don't even go there laddie. We are not talking about the morning after pill here. We are talking about chemically induced miscarriage.

Life In the Fast Lane.

Better for everyone? How exactly LTNS? What is better about aborting? Do you honestly think that abortion is a soft option? Do you really think that abortion is only a medical procedure, like pulling a tooth? Do you know the various risks involved in abortion? This whole attempt to downgrade abortion to a 'quick trip' down to the local surgery is purely a cost cutting exercise and nothing more ... regardless of what spin they put on it.
