Posted - 30/10/2007 : 09:48:28 This idea is back, after being dropped last week. Will it happen in Brighton and Hove and Portslade, in some of which there are plans for communal bins? How will the weighing take place with those?

Posted - 11/11/2007 : 11:05:03 Are rats taking Brighton over or have they already done so? http://www.theargus.co.uk/display.var.1824290.0.experts_called_in_after_rat_infestation_at_luxury_flats.php
It seems other areas of Brighton are suffering a surge in the rat population now rubbish collection is erratic.
Have you seen any rats where you live?
Charging by weight will only cause more fly tippng..... |

They will also have to make back garden bonfires illegal.
They have to all intents and purposes. quote: Simplified, the law says that no one may have a bonfire if the smoke from it will cause a nuisance to other people. If someone does cause a nuisance proceedings may be taken and the person can be fined up to £5000.
here
You have a bonfire and all your neighbour has to do is complain. They do not even have to demonstrate that they have spoken to you first. |

Martha what about our Council Tax we pay for it.
Are you saying you want to Pay Twice under Stinking New Labour?
Although Council tax is expensive, what comes out of that to go towards rubbish collection, street cleaning etc is quite small - sonething like £60-70pa. If a fair level could be set for what one person or a family should reasonably be expecting to throw away each week, then I don't think its wrong to charge those extra who create extra.
Who knows, you could actually end up saving money |

This is Poll Tax in disguise.
To the streets everyone. Riot! Riot! |

Posted - 01/11/2007 : 21:33:31 For myself, I would have no issue with having to pay an additional charge if I produced waste over a given amount per person say. However until the government has demonstrated that it has done all it can to ensure that the production of excessive packaging etcetera is curtailed, and where not curtailed rigorously prosecuted I think that pay-as-you-throw is just a soft option for a government who dare not take on the big boys so decides to pick on the little kids - much like a bully in a playground really. |

Posted - 01/11/2007 : 21:18:33 Back on topic, I can't see that pay-as-you-throw is anything other than fair. That said, rather than go after the consumer, more should be done to target the creators of the waste such as the large supermarket chains etc. Tiny changes in their methods outweigh anything householders can hope to achieve |

Posted - 01/11/2007 : 21:04:19 LT got banned too for constant harrasment of a female poster. Top class it was, I kept the post that the admin did saying what had happened and post it on the odd occasion just to piss him off.
Not long after lt was banned, a mysterious new poster arrived going by the name of 'Floyd Morris' - he had touble writing sentences, and had a distinct disregard for using the correct capital letters.
Those were the days. I often wonder where Floyd is now, working for New Labour is what I heard... |

Posted - 01/11/2007 : 20:53:47 This must all sound pretty bizarre to those who weren`t around at the time. I locked horns with Scrather a couple of times, but generally I really didn`t mind him/her too much. There was a faction who insisted they knew Scratcher was a her.

Scratcher was a poster on the old Argus Forums who left, oh about 2 years if not more, before the final demise of the old forums. |

They dig a bloody big hole, shovel the ground up into bloody high banks all round it, then pile in as much shit as it will hold, promising it won`t stink for miles around, and to eventually put a nice grassy lid on when it`s full, while they dig out another scar in the landscape somewhere else for the next lot. Sussex beware - We have ourinflux of un-recycled waste from Liverpool, and that`s bad enough, but I bet London has a lot more trash to dump in your backyard than Liverpool can produce to dump in ours! |
