He has just said Live on Worldwide TV News
"We are not under your type of Democracy,
You must Respect that etc."

Maybe he is making sure he stays in power?

Bhutto had documents about Election Fraud
just before she was murdered.

Interesting that of all the thousands of tributes paid to Benazir Bhutto by politicians of every stripe around the world, the one you chose to post was from the odious, medacious slime-ball Galloway. This would be the same Galloway who received all sorts of cash from the Pakistani government in the 90s to set up a Kashmir-lobbying group and publication: "East" and who also sent begging letters on House of Commons writing paper for even more money.

Well, he fawned all over Saddam and Assad, so nothing that revolting piece of carpet-bagging slime does surprises me any more. Still, I think having his self-promoting, oleageneous puff-piece posted here in full was a bit much. A simple link would have sufficed.

I wonder what his 'Respect' party members would have made of him campaigning alongside Benazir for the PPP - they've always struck me as much more likely to be Jamiat e Islami types.

You guess wrong Anubis. I don't like Gorgeous George, I have never liked Gorgeous George. I think he is a bandwagon jumper.

As for the regrets and hypocritical homilies ... no time for them either. But then I have never had much time for this supercilious 'we-know-what-is-best' trend in international politics.

Surely I'm not the only reader of this post who just doesn't understand your comment, Miriam.

The last time I wrote about George on Livewire was to remind readers of his active public demonstration in Westminster (in front of the Commons, allowed in those days) AGAINST British and American support for Saddam Hussein, who was dropping gas on the Kurds at the time. Presumably, he'd have had much more support from Miriam if he'd just shut his mouth, and/or joined the ranks of the traditional British parties and SUPPORTED the US and UK providing the weapons to Saddam?

Then when the illegal war was prepared, he made a great public display of opposition and backed the two million who marched (I and family were there!) ... horror of horrors, George presumably would have had your support if again he'd shut his gob, said and done nothing?

The clipping I posted above was a news item from the "East London Advertiser", which I thought was worthy of a wider readership. To my knowledge, George has not produced (or been party to the production of any "leaflet" of horror vis-a-vis the assassination. If only he'd just shut up, or simply "supported" the 'regrets' and hypocritical homilies from Gordon Brown & co .... then you'd have been more sympathetic, I guess?

Democracy comes in various strengths that are dictated by social attitudes and customs, it sometime slips back into tyranny as in Kenya at the moment but no reason to abandon its principles.
Probably the most difficult doctrine to practise but anything worth having never comes cheap......

They had to make it look good.
He will only be a figurehead, others will apply the policy that was laid down by his mother.
He will have to learn.
It depends on who he learns from and who he takes aid from.
His mothers "death" ensures he will be elected.

Poor kid. He should be back in Oxford enjoying his youth rather than painting a giant target on his back. What does he know about Pakistan? He's been living in London and Dubai for most of his life. Dynasty politics is sad ... carry it on for too long and you end up with Prince Charles!

Which democracy Nightowl? Yours? Mine? American or perhaps democracy as the Dutch or Danes or French see it? For the people, by the people? It doesn't really work like that though does it ... Oh we say it quick enough but in reality it is by the elected for the status quo. There are as many democracies as there are nations practising it and who is to say one way is better then another?

Must be devastating for the People of Pakistan thinking a new dawn of democracy was on the horizon then to be stolen from them by an act of such barbarity.

Everyone expected this.
Therefore did she make herself a martyr to further another end?

Is she really dead?

Conspiracy theory ahead!

Nations are political entities and as such they are necessarily social constructs rather then spontaneous organisms.

Pakistan is an "unnatural" country, a patchwork of ethnicities, tribalities, differing religious interpretations (and even religious minorities), much of its population culturally and intellectually anchored in the Middle Ages, some of it progressive and modern.

The Pashtun peasant is as intellectually and culturally (as well as socially) so far removed from his educated Sindhi compatriot in Karachi that the two might be from different planets.

Democracy does not flower in such a situation.

Apart from the fact that they live and breathe, there is no equivalence between them, and nor will there be for decades (and probably more) to come.

Pakistan is, I'm quite sure, one of those "nations" that is not a nation, and one that can only ever be held together at gunpoint. It will, for the forseeable future, be a kind of dictatorship pretending to be a kind of democracy, and should it ever become a "democracy" (for the expediency of western politicians rather than as a reflection of on-the-ground realities) it will be (as it always was) as a "democracy" that looks very like dictatorship.

You can say this about many countries, including the UK!
