The Parents are very Angry with the Argus. They say the pay is too low. And want their kids to leave the Argus jobs.

Posted - 07/01/2008 : 22:56:11 If they deliver 350 copies an hour, that's £7 at 2p a copy. And many houses are probably flats - two or three copies at a time. And it must keep them in better shape than many teenagers. |

A group of schoolgirls from Sussex received just one penny per paper for their newspaper delivery round, half the amount they should have been paid.

Posted - 07/01/2008 : 20:31:34 I don't know Daveb ... with third world child labour it is often the child's labour that keeps the family from starving. Delivering papers is not quite on a par with that I would have thought.
Then again, in principle the same holds I daresay ... We will buy jeans for £3.00 or 3 T-shirts for £7.50 (thereby effectively encouraging cheapest possible production costs) and by the same token, how much are we willing to pay to have our papers delivered? |

Posted - 07/01/2008 : 19:50:30 I could be wrong of course but I do seem to recollect being told that there is a minimum age requirement for paper boys and girls |

Posted - 07/01/2008 : 19:47:15 Paper delivery boys & girls have always been exploited by offering this level of pay. Out in all weathers and the dark they deserve more, especially on a Sunday. With all the health & safety laws I am surprised they let kids do this work. |

They only talked about the Girls, since their mums are getting angry.
I was wondering you see ... maybe there is a case for sex discrimination as well as exploitation of the underage worker. |
