The Tories' tactic with the King Alfred is to kick it into the long grass until after the General Election so that they can say they have obeyed residents' wishes and so hope to get Mike Wetherley in as MP - and then they can go ahead with a developer and plan of their choosing. |

A city that has got increasingly out of touch. Brighton & Hove residents want a leisure centre (with pool) at least as good as Crawley & (for goodness sake!) Burgess Hill. They accept that to fund this, there needs to be associated housing. Why is something so clear & simple to grasp beyond the council?
Picture Brighton and Hove without the sea to its front and without the Downs at its back. Not a pretty site is it? If you take away the (non-book) library, we're basically a town that has had no real infratructure progress since, say, the mid 80's? |

It looks as if the Tories will take a similar approach to the King Alfred as the previous lot.
Their geezer Ted Kemble is in the Argus's "Friday Inquisition" here, and he states that the King Alfred has permission for 750 flats - even though that was unworkable - and not for a school and that the Council itself cannot decide to have a 50 metre pool (so what sort of city is this when mere Crawley has one?). He gets shot down time and again by readers there. He even keeps referrring to the Sports Council when it's now Sports England, as somebody points out. He is evidently not to be trusted and everybody should be vigilant, especially as he also says that when there are "firm proposals" people will be consulted on those. So, yet again,. it is a sham consultation.
Looks as if Brown has got Kemble as a mole working for New Labour, says Mrs Poppadum.

Very little I expect. Brighton & Hove have stalled on everything. Too many tax payer funded talking shops have resulted in them missing the economic boat.
Sensible approaches to the KA, Brighton Centre etc could have seen genuine progress. Still, as long as work continues on that bandstand, the Tories will feel like real progress is being made. Lets face it, the demand for Brass Band performances is huge in Brighton & Hove isn't it?
Lets hope this is the last we hear of Karis and that they take a massive finacial hit with their Black Lion St development.

The radio has reported that Karis definitely out of the King Alfred - no chance of it coming back with any other design.
What will happen next? Experience has shown that residents have to be extremely wary. |

Gehry's design may have fallen victim to the credit crunch but in reality it should have fallen victim to the unsustainability of the project long term. |

Very interesting piece about architects in a recession.
One of them remarks that something to emerge from all this will be that it was foolish to try to sling up all these designs which are essentially boxy places in which nobody really want to live and were merely done to meet official "targets".

The Argus has now caught up with this story, and it sounds from that as if the Council is not keen to continue dealings with Karis.
Eye-catching front page. Bit of a contrast with the time when they and Councillor Watkins were boosting the "vision".
How much has been wasted on something unbuildable? |

And now ING has had to be bailed out by the Dutch government. Vast amount. They won't be rushing back to Hove.
How much cocaine had gone up those bankers' noses when they thought the seafront flats could ever be a viable proposition?
Will anybody ever trust banks again? These so-called institutions have lost all credibility in the real world. |

Shouldn't the headlne be "King Alfred Hopes Rise"? Hopes have risen that the horrible thing will not be built!
The Council has wasted so much money instead of repairing it until such time as it is in a position to afford something else. |
