When the basics are not affordable there will be trouble.

Perhaps a blip or the tip of the iceberg?

In a world where there is already too much demand for food from crops this will only add to the shortages.
Recent results fron UN FOA conference.

Yes no surprise really except for the size of the price increase. Farmers here in the Midwestern USA are maxing corn production because of the high potential price of the fall crop. The problem is the fertilizers and transportation costs are tied to petroleum costs so they have all sky rocketed. Serpent chasing its tail in an upward spiral. Add in some speculation and the normal big business futures contract buying and you end up with low income people without food. The whole ethanol production scheme here in the USA has been described to me as mad from day one. It’s almost the Guns and Butter/ demand supply example from the old Economics texts….

Not before time ... what on earth did they imagine bio-fuels were going to do? Increase food production?

Ther may be some facts in this?
From the article.
"BIOFUELS are the eco-cranks’ latest obsession. These bio-fools say: “Don’t use corn to feed people, turn it into ethanol instead, to feed your 4x4 gas guzzler. Forget the starving millions. Save the planet.”

The US will convert 18 per cent of its maize into ethanol this year, rising to 45 per cent by 2015. The EU aims for six per cent within two years.

These trends, plus world population growth of 73 million a year and the surging economic growth in India and China, drove up global prices of maize, wheat and rice by more than 50 per cent last year. What does it matter if the poor can’t afford bread? As Marie Antoinette pointed out, they can always eat cake."

Dithering Scottish Brown keeps saying we should help
these starving people
but the Dithering Fool is not doing anything.
Borninhove Posted - 13/04/2008 : 12:15:44
All problems everywhere in the world are because of Evil Bush Blair Brown.
FACT

Food prices go up worldwide
Oil has reached $112 a barrel
A year ago it was $60 a barrel

How much does it cost to ship the wheat/rice/maize around the world?
Brown has nothing to do with it

FACT

bio fuel crops may indeed be one answer ... however I also think we need to start thinking about what and how we are consuming. Especially here in the 'developed' world.

Really? All down to Brown?
Daveb Posted - 13/04/2008 : 09:20:21
Brown has little to do with this situation.

Growing bio-fuel crops instead of food may.
Tree huggers score another own goal!

Many could die of starvation and the riots before global warming gets us.

Time for strong armed forces to protect own countries resources?

Real global warming could be caused by nuclear war!
FUBAR Posted - 12/04/2008 : 14:20:22
That global warming better show up pretty fast then......
Borninhove Posted - 12/04/2008 : 14:08:08
There have been bread riots in Cairo this week, and India has just announced it is stopping the export of rice, which is going to hit us here in the Gulf VERY hard - there are huge numbers of workers from the subcontinent here and if they can't get rice at affordable prices, there might be 'a bit of a kerfuffle'.
Miriam Binder Posted - 12/04/2008 : 13:07:37
This has been on the cards for a long time.

Yes some areas now are no longer doing Exports
so many people in China to feed
they come first, of course.
