Posted - 11/11/2007 : 14:17:14 Update: 13-2-08 the old Fopp music store now has a Notices on the windows for Drinks Lic. etc for New Mini Somerfield. Close to the 99p store.
rswb posted this info first.
It is a small store with a big basement.
Downsizing due to the lack of profits like Evil Tesco gets or Walmart UK.
Life In The City.

St.James St Somerfield is in a mess many of the Fridge Units are leaking Water onto the Floor. No staff around all at the tills.
The Deli has been Downsized so much of the Veg is now down in front of those counters.
The Fast Tills near the entrance are no longer used so they have Cake Stands in front of them.
Many of the Lights are not working it is dirty on most floor space.
The whole store is a terrible state they may as well close it down.
Sign Of The Times.

Posted - 02/07/2008 : 11:30:50 Somerfield in St James's Street? You mean the ex Safeway. When Safeway closed its stores it became Morrisons but Morrisons then quickly sold it on: the only Morrisons presence in the area as far as I know, gone. |

Posted - 30/06/2008 : 21:40:06 Nice to hear from you again timytimy ... glad to hear you are happier in the other store. As for Jimmy Street Somerfield ... it has been on a downward slope for years as you say. I don't think I even bother going there anymore and haven't in over 2.5-3 years. |

Posted - 30/06/2008 : 18:55:43 Hey guys, Just wanted to give y'all an update, I've moved from Jimmy street to the north road Somerfield. The small store is doing better then had been hoped for, were beating the expected earnings by about 15-20k a month. The management team is also a hell of lot more approachable then the management team down jimmy street. Although the store is small and on occasion we do get some complaints about the delivery lorries parking in front of the store, all in all its a much better atmosphere for customers and staff. If you look past the horrible windows and signage the store is a nice local small store where staff are always willing to help, a much better improvement over jimmy street. The front of the store certainly needs improvement, they should really take down that horrible green on the windows and displays in front of them show off what they have for sale, but its not my department. As for Jimmy street, i've heard from mates inside that the old manager who was a complete and utter idiot was moved to a smaller store after the entire staff in the store wrote letters to the regional manager complaining. The official reason for him leaving was due to the fact that head office believed he couldn't handle a big store. They have the manager from London Road Somerfield running things now, no idea how he is doing. But from the latest inside info from the works seems to be moving Somerfield stores to more the size of the north road one, they are opening another somerfield up in north street which would be about the same size as the north road one. To be honest theres a lot of chat about them cutting their loses with Jimmy street entirely and concentrate on the smaller stores. Jimmy street somerfield has been declining for years now and has recently become so terrible that not only are customers complaining but the entire staff are too. I don't think it will be too long before you see a big FOR SALE sign above the jimmy street somerfield. |

Won't the Goods go in the back way. |

Posted - 25/04/2008 : 17:57:26 I wonder if this new Somerfield store will enjoy the luxry afforded to the other stores in the area, of blocking not only North Street but also possibly parking accross the traffic lights and junction making it dangerous indeed, |

Posted - 25/04/2008 : 11:36:44 The Somerfield in Church Road is hideous. How did it get permission? All the windows blocked up with bright-blue paint and slogans over them. Makes the Palmeira Square Tesco almost look a thing of beauty.
A mockery of the building. |

Posted - 14/02/2008 : 18:38:46 Nightowl if you have been in the St.James St Somerfield then you would be happy for a better smaller store.
On this Occasion everyone is for this.
They could have said sod it and moved out of that area.
This is Good News. |

Posted - 14/02/2008 : 17:40:02 Stack em high sell them cheap, modern day retailing but closes down our choice of shops to go to. It also puts enormous pressers on farmers and growers to work to even tighter budgets with all the risks. Good local shops and businesses are disappearing fast being unable to compete. The future looks like being a Tesco or Asda town only, what a thought... |

It was much better as a Fopp than a Somerfield.
No Fopp closed down other small record shops a great record shop in the sq., so they destroyed the area. They Priced matched all CD's to a fiver. And then the whole group of stores closed.

Posted - 12/01/2008 : 08:36:08 Downsize bit of a gamble.
But they have small store's in London so it may work. |

Posted - 12/01/2008 : 00:42:48 I think I may have an explanation.
I have looked at the local planning applications on the council website and it seems Somerfield have applied to open up on north street where the old fopp store used to be - a considerably smaller unit than their St James street store.
Also Somerfield have put in an application to open up yet another small outlet in what used to be the choices video rental store on church road in Hove. |

Posted - 11/01/2008 : 22:18:29 It also sounds as if they`re actively trying to lose staff rather than have to lay them off. Not nice - I wish you well in your quest for another job Timytimy, from the sound of it that`s the best plan! |

Posted - 11/01/2008 : 21:32:11 As i say not sure what they have in mind, but taking a wrecking ball to it and actually producing something better and more up-to-date without the leaking ceiling and such what would be a good idea. |

Posted - 11/01/2008 : 21:30:05 Thanks! All very interesting.
Sounds as if they are deliberately running it down.
I wonder what they have in mind for the place? |

Posted - 11/01/2008 : 21:29:35 Don't mention it, i have read the previous post and felt that someone should speak up, you certainly won't get any response from any letters and if you do it will only be something stupid like, "we are looking into it" |

Posted - 11/01/2008 : 21:25:28 No idea if they are closing it down, they had said about a refit but not sure if they will. Since the new manager came in, we have lost about 20 staff members and wastage levels have become a increasing worry so not sure if they will waste their money on it to be honest, i doubt i will be around for much longer to see what happens but there are worse things that could happen if they do close us down, certainly won't be missed. |
