Posted - 20/10/2008 : 18:23:27 Another legacy of the David Panter era as the Council chief Exec whose pathetic tenure in that post now casts a shadow over the Town. It was his spell at the helm which opened the floodgates for 'The Place To Be' campaign, King Alfred etc etc

Posted - 12/10/2008 : 11:44:44 So, here we are. Mid October. Any sign of anything happening?
In this climate, who's going to fund such a development that has such potential financial pitfalls?
With this, the KA and Black Rock Ice Rink debacles, isn't it about time the council started ensuring it only enters into planning projects with credible organisations who are actually capable of delivering more than a few pretty artists impressions? |

That has not stopped Radio 4 interviewing a West Pier spokeswoman. The same spokeswoman was interviewed by the BBC in 1998 and delighted at the news of money for restoration then. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/69460.stm
There was even talk of a millennium eve party to see in 2000.

Posted - 24/07/2008 : 07:30:29 article in the Times Knowledge at the weekend how 'the pier is making a triumphant comeback at adventurous resorts'. No mention of Brighton(palace pier) although it does show a picture of the Helter Skelter on the Cover, but the defunct West Pier is mentioned and the suspicious way burned down. Norman Foster is even designing an eco friendly one in Italy. A new West Pier instead of the i360 would be marvelous. Anyone interested in paying for it and maintaining it. |

Funded by the Council ? I thought it was King Alfred that they were subsidising ?? |

Yep. The Portsmouth Tower was funded by the taxpayer....they had a big problem with the funding what I remember. Also, the build quality is questionable as they were finding voids in the concrete. |

I made a comment about this (Leonard Lemsip) on that article: "I don't think it'll ever be built. And even if it is, it will flop. When you go up in the london eye you see all the famous london landmarks. What's there to see from the i360? Not a lot."
One of the replies: "I totally understand, there is only the iconic coastal landscape and the visual beauty of the South Downs to admire."
I didn't bother replying (on the Argus pfff, what's the point).
But are these people mad? From the eye you'll see one way: The sea. And the other way: A fairly standard town (apart from the pavillion) and some green fields in the distance.
That's it! So in my opinion, there's next to nothing to see (esp when compared to the london eye).
Am I wrong?
you could say the same about Portsmouth (AKA shithole) but there are hundreds of people queued to get up the tower there each day |

I would think that the Brighton Eye is the last thing that this town(city)needs. What is the point of it. Typical of Brighton Councillors though to choose something like that to dominate a prime spot on the seafront. Only useable if you pay for it and lasts about 8 minutes. The monorail is another non starter. Would ruin the seafront. Maybe Nick Lomax could design an eco friendly sports centre for the King Alfred Site or what about the Richard Rogers design. What about using seawater in the pools. They used to. Will the agreement with Karis become nul and void if Gehry has pulled out and this scheme doesn't get built or have Karis now got hold of the site for the remainder of the lease? What have the Councillors signed away?
Agree with much said here. Local architects could make a big contribution to 'major projects'. Never understood how the Brighton Eye could get as far as it did. Great idea while it stayed on the back of an envelope. |

Posted - 15/07/2008 : 20:28:56 It is so sad. Another one that will never happen. Still never mind. Let us have a few all expenses paid meetings. Launch an enquiry into what went wrong. Commission a few reports from our mates, opps sorry experts. Have a few more meetings. Blame the previous council.

Posted - 15/07/2008 : 11:48:38 Another delay announced today. Building now set to start 'in a matter of weeks'. June was touted (which itself was late) so now september is mooted...
Another one bites the dust? King Alfred, Brighton Centre, Black Rock - now the Marina is said to be running into trouble. Can our planners deliver anything?
Brighton is a place for dreamers who like to live life through rose tinted spectacles. sadly, the real world (housing market, steel prices etc) have no place for this. The Council should start to deliver, sensible, workable improvements instead of thinking that Brighton exists in a bubble of its own. It doesn't and while 'unfashionable' other towns get on with it, Brighton ends up looking stupid - talking the talk but failing miserably to walk the walk. |

And he came down via Hove thanks to local knowledge. The intended route into brighton - the A23 - is now screwed. Had he been stuck in a jam from Patcham, his day out might not have been so great. |

What about the reaction to the letter published in the Argus about the day out in Brighton. http://www.theargus.co.uk/display.var.2290670.0.0.php
Yes, he's had a nice day out by the sea but this isn't the everyday experience of Brighton is it? For those living & working here the reality is somewhat different and for those that move here they often enjoy a honeymoon period where the rose tinted specs make everything great.
It's that classic case of peering behind the wallpaper. The festival, beach, sunshine etc all do a great job of papering over the cracks but underneath we all know the unaddressed shortcomings that exist.
The council are too happy to accept statistics like the town being the drug-death capital of the UK as being a by-product of our 'vibrant' cafe, bar & club society.
Besides, he comes from Byfleet which is a suburb of Woking for goodness sake. Mosside would be a nice day out in comparison...

Posted - 26/05/2008 : 12:10:41 Exactly so ... It may be a great city to wander into for a day off here or there but it is far from a great place to be when you live here all year round. |
| Daveb |
Posted - 26/05/2008 : 11:34:57 A good point of view from a tourist. I think the point however is this... Brighton & Hove need tourists but some money should be spent on some decent facilities that local tax payers can benefit from all year round.
Martha Gunn is more than likely correct in saying a lot of Brightonians are now living on the outskirts.
