"Of all the towns in England, Brighton is the one where I can honestly congratulate the Mayor, Corporation and officials for what they do to keep the character of the town and make it cheerful and welcoming." This is what John Betjeman wrote in the Spectator in 1956, and he said that the great Victorian churches of St Bartholomew's, St Martin's, St Michael's and St Mary's rose "like huge red battleships over the chimney pots and Georgian crescents".
What would he make of the Council in the quarter-century since his death, and in particular what would he have to say about the behaviour of Councillor Watkins who shirked the opportunity to cancel the grotesque King Alfred application?
The Election which soon followed this led to a substantial drop in the LibDem vote, especially that for Councillor Watkins, and the Greens - without any particular effort - were in hailing distance of ousting him.
As the next Election now begins as soon as the previous one has finished, it will be interesting to see what moves all the parties make in this key ward. Will the LibDems be so rash as to put Councillor Watkins up again?
As things stand, the Greens are set to take one if not two seats there especially as they have councillors upon all the Committees while the LibDems no longer merit a place on such crucial Committees as Planning.

Frank Gehry says that the King Alfred is cancelled.
So Watkins could have voted against it anyway instead of driving the LibDems into oblivion.

A friend and I regularly travel around looking for specific addresses. Some of the numbering systems in place would make your hair curl (or straighten it). I myself live in a property numbered in the latter half of the 10-20 ... the number just before mine? Yep you guessed it ... it is number 5! |

I think the Greens are perfect for Brighton & Hove and I can see them dominating the political landscape here in the years to come.
They love jumping on trendy bandwaggons, trot out media-savvy soundbites but accomplish nothing of any note

The disenchantment with the LibDems in Brunswick could be a crucial factor in the result for Hove in the General Election. There might well be a swing to the Greens rather than to the Conservatives, who made no impact in Brunswick in the local election. |

Quite a few commentators in today's papers write about the poor performance by the Lib Dems in Crewe.
Voters have bothered with them less as a place for a protest vote.

This letters is in today's Guardian. It is not only locally that the LibDems are at sixes and sevens.
In the long debates so far on the European Union bill in the Lords, two things have struck me. First the immense significance of this treaty, on which the British people were promised a referendum by all major parties; and, at the risible end, the ludicrous contortions of the Lib Dem peers. They have already voted against amendments supported in the Commons by Liberal Democrat colleagues, including one moved by Vince Cable. But on Tuesday night they surpassed themselves.
In the Commons, Nick Clegg ordered his troops to storm out because they were not allowed a vote on what Mr Clegg said was the vital referendum - to decide if Britain should stay in the EU. Yet when an amendment to achieve precisely this was tabled in the Lords, Lib Dem peers merely abstained. No serious party can adopt contrasting positions on a policy its leader has deemed to be so important as to disrupt the Commons. The few remaining shreds of Mr Clegg's credibility were shot to pieces. A leader who cannot stay consistent on a great question for even a few weeks, or who cannot get his parliamentary party to adopt the same position in each house, cannot ever aspire to lead a country.

Polly Toynbee usually bangs the drum for Labour but here writes from Crewe, and admits that it looks like losing. No mention of how the LibDems might do there.

The latest poll shows Labour slumped, not that far ahead of the LibDems. Which makes the LibDems' position in Brighton and Hove all the more ignominious, as their proportion of the vote is so very much worse than that national picture.
Councillors Elgood and Watkins have run the party into the ground locally through their self-serving attitude.
And so they are now Green with envy at another party which has resoundingly overtaken them. |

Watkins has recognised that he would lose to the Greens next time and so he will not stand again. He is just sitting it out now. |

Mrs Poppadum was at All Saints on The Drive at lunchtime for a concert and heard afterwards during some talk outside that councillor David Watkins has somehow come into the money -and moved. |

This report shows that "new build" is in trouble, especially with "off plan". so, if the King Alfred collapses, will the LibDems suddenly change tack again and say they are glad?
