That decisive? More like she'd spend ages bickering with her other members of staff about what to do by which time the policies have all gone off and have to be thrown away. Of course, she'd then blame the 'previous administration' for supplying her with defective stock |

Latest Homes now has a weekly column by greengrocer-turned-Council Leader Mary Mears in which she will tell readers about the wild and exciting world of Council decisions for the week ahead.
This column does not sound as if it is in fact written by her. She would be more likely to adopt a tone of, "come on, we've got four policies left here, clear all 'em all up for a pound!" |

The Council and the Mayor, who went to a Gatwick ceremony, made much of the airline firm Zoom naming one of its planes after Brighton and Hove. This was going to give the city a boost around the world, blah blah blah...
Today, however, Zoom has gone belly up and left passengers stranded.
Wherever they are in the world, the passengers must now feel much the same the way as we hapless Portslade residents, who are are treated so casually by the Council.

Mrs Poppadum has heard that a Hove Society is being formed to discuss local matters over dinners and at other meetings as a result of disquiet over the King Alfred.
Presumably those of us in Portslade will not be invited to join! |

The Council is promoting a performance by Holy Fuck, in Victoria Gardens, on August 16th. This does not sound very decorous but perhaps that is a sign of the new regime's priorities. |

Latest Homes says that former mayor Carol Theobald spent all day on public display in a bubblebath and also posed, in "an orange, daisy-trimmed bikini flanked by two oiled musclemen in skimpy briefs".
Even if this did nothing for the city's economy, it perhaps raised the "profile" of the place. |

is the new Council Leader for the Conservatives.
She was on ITV Local TV
and sounds very fair. |

I reckon our councils would be better of concentrating on the local residents and local needs rather then trying for all these grandiose schemes that are designed to be nothing more then money pits with a feather in their cap! |

Liverpool Council, the worst performing in the country, had a £20 million shortfall on its European City of Culture, met by selling off care homes. It was always baloney that this City of Culture would be an economic "generator".
So many people ignore the chaotic Brighton Festival, anything more would have been unlikely to succeed. |

Nasa could have usefully consulted Roger French. He specialises in vehicles which travel without any passengers aboard and end up in barren lands. |

As the Phoenix craft has successfully landed on a previously unexplored part of Mars, I think we can reasonably deduce that NASA did not call upon Brighton and Hove City Council for advice. |

The crafty Tories have put a photograph of mosaics at Tarner Park in City News with various people in front.
It does not point out that some of these are in fact Green councillors but leaves readers to think they are part of the unemployed... |

There are a number of ways that members of the public can get involved in local government. These include:
* vote at local elections if you are registered;
* contact your local Councillor about any matters of concern to you;
* inspect a copy of the constitution and obtain a copy (NB there will be a fee payable for a paper copy of the constitution to cover printing costs, but you can also view the Constitution online.)
* attend meetings of the Council, the Cabinet, Individual Cabinet Member Meetings and Council Committees except where confidential matters (for example personal, financial or commercial information) are being discussed;
* participate in the Council’s question time and contribute to investigations by the Overview and Scrutiny Committees in accordance with the Council’s procedures;
* see non-confidential reports and background papers, and a record of key decisions made by the Council, the Executive and the Committees;
* complain to the Council about failure in services or maladministration;
* complain to the Ombudsman if you think the Council has not followed its procedures properly. However, you should only do this after using the Council’s own complaints process;
* complain to the Standards Committee if you believe that a Councillor has not followed the Council’s Code of Conduct;
* inspect the Council’s accounts and make your views known to the external auditor. |

The movie of Sex and the City is not having its world premiere in Brighton.
To listen to the Council and Fanshawe, you'd think the producers would be clamouring to do so, that the councillors would be clattering along a red carpet in Jimmy Choo shoes at the Odeon.
