Indeed. Houses and flats have become smaller. So much so that battery hens refuse to buy them.
If you go to any new development you will find the room too small. No cats allowed, let alone swing. |

Mrs Poppadum has just rung to say that Josh Arghiros has applied to change the application details for his dodgy-sounding restaurant in Black Lion Street - and the printed application is credited to a certain "Mr Karis".
It will take more than that to throw people off his scent, she said! |

Lets face it, The King Alfred development that was given planning permission is dead in the water at the moment. Doesn't planning permission last for 3 years or something giving the developer a window of opportunity to put something in place?
Hopefully, Karis will get their fingers burned in the economic climate with their development in Black Lion Street meaning they are unable to progress although that still leaves the KA site in limbo for possibly years. |

This shows that flats in Leeds and Birmingham - "new build" - have fallen in price by up to 50%. They cannot get rid of them.
The King Alfred flats cannot possibly be built. Why is the council being so slow to announce any new plan - or overdue maintenance - for the King Alfred?

Yesterday's Argus had a small report which said that November 9th is the date when Karis has to settle the King Alfred matters and that there will be meetings about it (in public?) in October and November.
Are these the formalities of the end game? |

Any new building that removes veiws should be able to be objected to in the same way as light deprevation.
KA, Marina, Ocean Hotel development are all over-the-top. |

Good piece here about towers in general. Brighton has got it all wrong by putting the odd one here and there. If there were to be towers, and these probably do not suit Brighton and Hove anyway, they should be in clusters. But, even so, any here would only have that visual effect from out at sea. Gehry's original proposal for 4 towers made more sense than the subsequent proposal but it was the wrong place.
As the article says, Brighton and Hove should make more of their streets.

The thing is ... our council is far more focused on bringing tourism and businesses; not that their rather hotchpotch approach is doing much to attain that. Nah, there is not a single iota of political will regarding the improvement of facilities for local residents. What was it Martha Gunn said; something about style over substance? The trouble is that we have a strong executive and weak councillors who, in the main are more concerned with staying on the right side of the executive.
So there you have it, a load of paid employees who are so protected that they are never answerable for any of the grave errors of judgement or pure plain and simple inability to do the job they are paid for on the one hand. And a weak governing body in the shape of by and large - and with a few notable exceptions - councillors who are more concerned with advancing their political careers in their various parties then the residents they are supposed to represent. |

If the Edwardian swimming pool in Marshall Street, Soho, can be restored for re-opening in 2011, then perhaps it is not so very hard to make something of the current King Alfred. |

I have said this before ... the Gehry buildings that were proposed for that poor site were merely rehashes of buildings he had put up elsewhere (Dallas being one place that jumps to mind). I doubt Gehry ever really had any personal involvement with B&H. Could he even find it on a map? |

Frank Gehry is too busy to work on a theatre in Brooklyn. So he is unlikely indeed to pick up any threads in Hove.

I am sure this has been said before.
Brightons road system is inherently flawed. All roads lead to a hub on the coast, therefore access and exit are limited. By making the road even narrower with build outs and bus lanes flow can only decrease.
This will only improve if less people travel in by car which is possibly part of an ultimate plan to rid the roads of B&H of all cars? |

I agree with Martha Gunn's recent posts.
Somebody noted the silence from Fanshawe (probably now in his Scottish home town Edinburgh). However the 'delusions of grandeur' and the 'unworkable schemes' where obvious many years ago and well before the current economic circumstances. Where are the many people who without question supported this (and other) projects ?
Interesting that Gehry's recent comments about the Hove project are well documented but we still hear that they want him to redesign it. |

Sadly Martha I cannot do anything else but agree with you wholeheartedly. I wish it were different and that this was not only a place I called home but a place that called me home; rather then just a beacon to tacky seaside tourism, pretentious architectural posturing and inept public services. |

Because Crawley does not have dellusions of grandeur and simply gets on with trying to provide decent services for its residents.
Brighton, on the other hand, believes itself to be the worlds #1 seaside resort - a culture that perpetuates itself right through Brighton & Hove Council.
This has resulted in millions spent looking at inherently unworkable schemes that has backfired now that the housing boom has ended. lets hope that when there is an economic upturn, there is a more realistic approach. Its amazing that Brighton & Hove Council went all weak at the knees when a Hollywood actors name was casually dropped into the mix who, lets face it, probably couldn't point to Brighton on a map of the UK.

I do quite a bit of driving around in Sussex. I am continually struck by the mess that Brighton is when compared with other locations. Why is it that Crawley manages that which appears to continually elude Brighton? |

No future for big developments in Brighton only bus lanes on the coast road, at the cost of £1.8 million what a disaster.
Most of these sites screaming out for development will just be left to be neglected for decades, who wants to invest in Brighton with its self inflicted transport and infrastructure failures.
Change of council is a must now, but who do we vote for in May? |
