Even if they’re not there the council still grits the roads, the bin men will still check if the bins need emptying, the street lights will be on and the libraries will be open. Them owning a second home in an area will not reduce the number of unemployed, the teenage mums on benefits so why should they get a discount? I cannot see how an area full of second homes reduces a councils costs, so they must recover the cost by having a large increases in council tax penalising the people who live there 24/7. |

I know ... it is in a town where there is no homelessness ... maybe. I certainly don't know and I don't think it really is the point as such. The point, as you quite nicely make in your post, is in fact the depleted mining village. The over-population of some parts of a country and the mass migration from others.
That people are moving to where the work is - and in many cases isn't. And that sustainable living is not possible were people are. Which in essence brings about the premium put on housing in some parts and the surplus in others. |

If in that town there are homeless people sleeping on the streets, then "yes", Miriam, of course it would be obscene. But I doubt if there be a single such person, there. There are thousands of empty homes all over the country, in places where there is no demand for housing -- I remember, quite recently, in a depleted mining village; there was a whole street for sale, every house offered at £1, but not a single buyer! Because there was an uninhabited street doesn't make it "obscene" in an abstract sense, surely? |

Do you not think there is something almost indecent, if not positively obscene, about a 30-apartment complex that stands largely empty for most of the time Anubis? |

mmm... so whilst some people struggle to get onto the property ladder and new towns are being built over geenbelt to accomadate the housing shortage, this aparment sits mostly empty. |
