The Sussex Book Shop
on St.James Street is now going to be a American Starbucks
with their weak own branded Tea.

They are working on that site now.
It is a big corner store
Typical of that American group to move in on Every area
they can.

For the Worst Tea
Starbucks are for you.

"(de-)Starbuckification" what a lovely word! I wonder if it will get entered into the Oxford dictionary.

The tide is turning back in favour of proper coffee shops.

I did hear something about Starbucks on Radio 4 ... not just this particular one. It seems that they have been told to cease the custom of 'dipping' spoons in permanently running water due to the need to conserve this precious resource!
Miriam Binder Posted - 25/10/2008 : 08:32:05
More then likely.
Daveb Posted - 25/10/2008 : 08:25:38
A lot of fuss over nothing then?
Miriam Binder Posted - 25/10/2008 : 08:21:22
Not that I am aware of
Daveb Posted - 25/10/2008 : 08:18:20
This is all very quiet. Have ANY of the many tea/coffee shops had to close because of evil Americanee Starbucks?
Edwin the Scot Posted - 24/10/2008 : 19:12:05
It cannot be long before this case is decided by the Planning Inspector.

Who has money for this milky "coffee" right now? The smart money is on tea shops.

Over SIXTY closing down across Oz due to financial crisis and putting over 600 out of work.

And more: http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/starbucks-axes-partners/2008/07/29/1217097227287.html

I don't see many people celebrating it here.

Thank you Anubis ... any idea of what the general trend of the piece was?
Anubis Posted - 27/06/2008 : 21:30:24
I don't have a "view" about this, myself, BUT did hear a brief discussion about Starbucks in St James St on radio 4 programme "You & Yours" today, a bit after midday ... for those interested to 'replay' it ....
Furzewick Posted - 26/06/2008 : 23:17:36
And todays article mentioned 'the more than 500 letters of objection against the application'.
In which case why did it not go before the planning committee ?
Did they submit the letters to the wrong application ?

This could run and run!
Starbucks team have built a tricky defence.
By the time this is all over they will have decided if they want to stay or not.

If my memory serves me correctly circa 1964 -70 this used to be a an electrical shop of sorts which sold records? Used to have a sign outside showing the Top Twenty. No coffee but maybe coffee pots?

Daveb Posted - 21/06/2008 : 13:38:04
Don't know.
I do know I have not sent any.
Furzewick Posted - 21/06/2008 : 13:27:19
Seen some people demonstrating today outside Starbucks.
What about the rumour that they sent loads of objections to the wrong planning application ?
thedelboy Posted - 16/06/2008 : 07:44:36
I thnik "Starbucks" has every right to stay in ST James st,It may get the shabby run down places to get thier arses into gear and tidy thier own places up (Tea cosy excepted as that is brilliant last time I went in got a filthy look cos the old lady on the table opposite "Farted" and when the waiter came out I am sure she told him it was me!!)

Full Moon tonight which has Not Been Seen for a Long Time. Starbucks which saw it's first store Born in Hove a few years ago is still the subject of a protest. It will be interesting to see how the re-wiring works out.

thanks moon,we are a community even though we do not always agree with each other,I think that is the whole point of a forum;debate try to get others to see your point of view .It is a minority that ruin it for others(and I am not on about you know who)I make my point in different ways I do know that sometimes I can be over bearing but other posters and admin normally put me in my place fast enoughalthough I have on occasion gone far beyond reason;normally I will see that as I press send and am the first to apologise for my behaviour(even before admin or others point it out
