That's an occupational hazard, along with getting your knuckle split open by the stick.
Sometimes the sticks split and go flying into the crowd, but we have public health insurance to cover that...
Did you know Morris dancing got a special exemption from the licensing act. Meaning it can be performed anywhere.

They are quite good, problem is the cost of the Chinchilla feed has gone through the roof with the rising food prices.

Wow! All morris men should have a giant chinchilla doing fast ragga!
I have fond memories as a boy of seeing a morris men troupe who had a guy dressed in a scary dragon costume who would spend the dances scaring the life out of little children and goosing women. Ah, such happy times. He'd probably get arrested nowadays.

Here is a picture of the famous moon dancing, notice how pretty and colorful my side is.
Ok the thing about this article is that the Witchmen were dancing in the neo-pagan tradition since the early 80's about 10-15 years before this side, so this really isn't anything new going on here.
Some cotswold sides dance with hankies and sticks, there are also other styles of morris such as North-west, there are also border morris sides who don’t think of themselves as pagan, so it’s all a bit more of a complex picture than painted here (as so often is the case). I mean people still do maypole dancing, but maypole dancing isn’t seen by everyone as being ‘pagan’ it’s just a tradition that people partake in.
There have been active Border Morris sides dancing since the 70s, and some sketchy evidence of the Borders tradition going back further as mentioned in the articule. Folk dancing has always been part of the so-called 'pagan' tradition, but it has never known itself as pagan. Neo-Paganism is a fashion statement. All the lord and lady wiccan crap is a bit over stated.
Recently there was the excellent Imagined village folk project that was trying to reconnect folk music with modern culture and updating the sound. Of course this aspect is important, but personally I think it’s also important that the people who have been authentically preserving and carrying on dances and songs down the generation continue to do so. Sometimes it can be a bit frustrating for these people when a famous artist claims to be rediscovering folk music or reinventing it.
All traditions are re-invented though, Morris like folk music is a living tradition handed down the generations. Each generation put's its own stamp on it. Mainly there are lots of regional differences between styles and dances. I'm glad that these people are reinventing a tradition and putting their own style to it. That's what culture is all about new mixes. There will still be people who try and recreate the more traditional forms of the dance and that's great too.
Whether or not women were allowed to dance caused a bigger storm than this during the Morris world. I dance in a mixed side, but many think this is not traditional.
Many of the traditional cotwold dancers can be quite po-faced but then there are other Cotswold side that we go out with together. There is plenty of space for all the different styles.
