Why do you think this old skeleton is being pulled out of the cupboard, is it to cool down Americas close relationship with Israel?
As to the truth,I think it was a deliberate attempt by Israel to get America to attack Egypt which they nearly did.

Something about this came up in the old forum last year or the year before. If memory serves everyone agreed it was nasty bit of work...especially the second wave of attack after the ship was helpless and the US had contacted Israeli command and reportedly received confirmation that the ship was indeed US Navy and not to be attacked again. But it WAS a war zone, and there was a certain amount of desperation on the part of Israeli forces that may not have been as confident of survival and victory as later reports portrayed. Shoot first identify later seems to be a familiar policy in any hot war zone.

Well, it was more than a friendly fire incident Miriam, but we will never know the full truth as to much information has been suppressed or erased with the passage of time.
But reading the survivors accounts of the incident throws great doubt over the official version offered to us.

Nah, it would have been a pretty stupid way to try and get America to attack Egypt. As for why? Well, who knows why any skeletons are pulled out of cupboards ... maybe they need to make some room for more stuff.
