Those vile abusers and the woman who doesn`t deserve the title `mother` have been brought to some kind of justice - though I agree they were too leniently sentenced. We all express disgust at this awful story, and that our society can produce such vile abusers.
The abuse was chronic, had been going on for years.
The `mother` was abused herself, it was claimed (No, I`m not making excuses for her!)
It`s nothing new, I nursed a lady in her nineties who told me her daddy did very bad things to her and she was afraid of men all her life. Nor is it exclusive to our society, as many very young children are sold by poor parents into prostitution, etc.
What is FAIRLY new here, or at least `recent`, is that more and more of these cases are eventually brought out into the open, and eventually many of the perpetrators are prosecuted.
Victims are getting more support and encouragement to disclose that they have been abused.

The very first time a victim of abuse tells someone, it is usually someone they trust, someone they already know, rather than directly reporting the abuse to the Police. That first Listener could be a teacher, dinner lady, fellow pupil who tells her mum...colleague, a neighbour, a friend or a friend`s mum, etc.. it could be any one of us who hears them first. It WILL make us feel VERY uncomfortable. If a victim of abuse has trusted us enough to want us to listen, that victim is also making an unspoken plea for support in talking to someone who can STOP the abuse and/or bring the abuser to justice. Ultimately that HAS to be the Police. The victim may dread the idea of talking to them, but the First Listener has to reassure the victim that this really is the best thing to do. Police can be amazingly tactful, gentle and supportive, in such circumstances. (And if the victim is a Minor, it is our legal duty to ensure that the Police are informed.)
It`s not Nice, it`s not Easy, but it`s absolutely necessary that the truth comes out, that the First Listener supports the victim to do that.
It could be any one of us who has been appalled at this news story. It`s not enough to listen sympathetically, give advice and then back away. Remember that folks.

It really makes you wonder whether we are all the same species at times.

I was thinking that the title to this thread was a bit strong...then I read the article.
