I see Jayne Bennett has been allocated to Children, Families and Schools and Culture, Tourism & Recreation, a hot potato and a spicy tamale. Planning is evenly split between the Conservatives and the Labour and Green mob with 6/3/3 ... I think I would have liked to have seen Jayne Bennett on Planning, preferably in place of one of that labour mob but failing that the greens. Still if the greens have learnt from their mistakes in the previous admin and the conservatives stand by what they promised ...

There is a mathematical system by which Councillors are apportioned to Committees. They cannot simply go on any old one, each of which has to be balanced in proportion to the parties' overall numbers.

As a result, for example, the LibDems do not qualify to be on Planning but they have one on Policy and Resources which is a bit larger.

Not in relation to a specific committee but I have heard it said that the Conservatives conceded too much in terms of distribution of seats amongst Parties.

Do we know who has been appointed to what ... Apart from Jayne Bennett that is or is it a case of only the party seats have been allocated to date?

I do not think that the Conservatives can concede seats. It has to be worked out on a set basis.

What Labour did last time was to give the LibDems a couple of chairs - and the few bob that goes with it - of committees in exchange for vital votes - e.g. King Alfred.

The Conservatives have not done that.

It will be interesting to see how it works out.

Don't know about the rest of you forumites, but i'm already missing some of our dear departed friends in the Argus reports of local affairs.
For example who is replacing ' Gill Mitchell, chair of transport committee commented that...' or 'Simon Burgess, Leader of the council said that......'

Nice expression: forumites !

Don't hold your breath. I think the Labour Party people are waiting for a few classic ones from the new Conservative team.

Yes, Councillor Bodfish was always good for the local electricians, what with those blown fuses of his.

He is already squatting, has been for a while. He and his mates have found this place in SW1 and even got free electricity into the deal. As in the old places, they sit around talking but have now got a few chairs in to replace those old bursting bean-bags. There isn't any sign outside but locals refer to it as "the Lords" for some obscure reason.

He does seem rather upset that his rattle has been taken away.
He may believe that just because the disaffected labour voters turned green that labour should retained power. This is on the grounds that there is still a majority left vote.

He does not appear to get the point they did not vote labour because they were against labour, due to recent events and decisions.

If labour and the greens are so alike then they should form a coalition and hold power.

Time was, when the Greens got one seat, Lord Bassam was enraged by them, and yet here he is now saying that they and Labour are akin to each other...

It is a good thing that there are three main parties in Brighton and Hove.

Could be that Labour goes further down next time as Greens advance into East Brighton and Brunswick especially if the Greens get the Pavilion MP in the meanwhile.

Will the Conservatives gain more seats in Portslade?

The poor leadership of the LibDems - desperate to keep their perch in Brunswick - means that the LibDems have lost all chance of getting other seats, and, what's more, their remaining one is so vulnerable now. Lib Dems members must be feeling short-changed.

Shame about the Labour Party locally. It is precisely because dinosaurs like Bassam and Bodfish have hung around too long that it is in such a state. It really doen't say much for the next generation within the Party either that they haven't ousted them and now, they are led by that strange Mitchell woman. It could be a generaton before Labour rule again, and they haven't grasped at all how horribly wrong and alienating many of the decisions reached were. Hence the loss of so many seats.

According to Gill Mitchell, most of the Councillors turned up to the first meeting dressed to the nines to greet the new Mayor sporting her finery at the inaugural beano but all the new Greens wore t-shirts, a dress-down Thursday it seems.

Probably the Greens have it right. People do not want to see a bunch of suits, that is all too much associated with New Labour which somehow thought that Paul Smith was the new socialism.

This is not new for the Greens. They have been infamous for dressing like that in parliament elsewhere in Europe. I think there was once a flower pot as well.

Interesting would be what the message on the T-shirts was.

This confirms reports that Gill Mitchell is having difficulty in getting Labour people onto the Planning committee.

This list shows that they have yet only two of their three - and a meeting is imminent. Bob Carden does not want to be on it anymore but it looks as if he'll have to turn up for a bit.

Apparently there was a notice in the newspaper last week from the Council giving local residents the opportunity to query council expenditure. This is a limited time opportunity that comes round once a year. Anyone with more details ?

This seems to confirm the stories that Sue John still has a bit of a perch at SEEDA and the Local Government Association.

The Seeda entry does not make it clear that she was booted off the Council entirely. Sin of omission.

Hold on a minute ... if she is off the council entirely, which we know she is, what is her reason for being on SEEDA?

The biography is somewhat cut down.
And you don't have to be a politician to be on SEEDA (but it helps!)

This being the case, then why don't we all nominate Long Time No See for Seeda? It might do something for the price of tea.
