Last night (Sunday) at about 2am a man threw himself off of the upper promenade onto the lower promenade and either killed himself or was seriously injured. I know this because I was in the vicinity. Yet as of now there hasn't been a word of mention of this in the paper or on the bbc. How come?

| Sad fact that people are killed or take their own life everyday. Not all are reported in the press. That's life. |
We're all doomed! Head for the hills before they start heading for you! |

Perhaps the Police asked the media not to report this. As for the Argus - they would probably fail to report half of Brighton washed away into the sea, unless it was on Twitter or a Press Release was received by them. |

| Amen to that press release bit. All we'd need is some artists impressions, of say a huge pastie shaped building called 'Greggsworld' and some statement about it being a greggs related activity fun centre, and the Argus would run it front page. Despite us not having any money to make it. |

Odd sometimes what doesn't make it into the news.
But I'm just wondering now - what's the mechanism whereby potential news stories get passed to the media? I'd guess that the various emergency services have press officers, but do these people go trawling through incident logs to pick out newsworthy stories for the media? So perhaps in this case a press officer didn't pick up on the seriousness of the incident, or perhaps the incident was logged in a garbled way.
Or is the reporting mechanism simply individual staff who find they can get the odd £20 by tipping off a media contact? I know that does happen to some extent. Perhaps on this occasion the staff member on the take wasn't on duty. |

| The Argus does, though, ask readers to send in stories. |

If the front page thing worked, it would be brilliant. Argus has been silly before. Good image and text + Hollingbury staff = hilarious result |
