Which crazy view is that then LTNS? That Pakistan should return to being governed under its constitution and that elections should be held under the constitution?

Elections are going to go ahead.

The Crazy American view
is American Democracy.

He is saving his own position, of course.

But the point is the Americans
do not control the world.

As for the UK,
today MI5 is giving info on thousands of young British Muslims
who are being trained up
to bomb the UK.

So New Labour need to sort out the UK
before they join up with the Corrupt Bush Clan.

They are? Really? Yet earlier ... yesterday in fact ... you said they could be as long as a year away.

Still it is good they have elections isn't it ... even if they happen when opposition leaders are under house arrest and a state of emergency has suspended the constitution.

And as for His set up for Elections
it ain't our problem.

The UK has thousands of Young "British Born" Muslims
who want to bomb the UK.
So Stinking Corrupt New Labour

The return and expulsion of opposition leader Nawaz Sharif is part of a larger political power-play in which Washington is deeply involved, says Irfan Husain in an article here

America should stay out.
It will not make things any better.

It must be remembered that Pakistan has nuclear weapons and that is a big problem for the West, not to mention India.

America has an Aid package amounting to a total of several billion dollars and includes sweeping debt rescheduling, grants stretching over many years and trade benefits as a reward for its support against terrorism. This is likely to be ongoing despite the current events there.

Not likely that America is going to stay out of it all is it.

Yes and so does the UK.

They can stop all that money right now.

Pakistan can then do deals with Russia.

CASE CLOSED.

I meant they should stay out in a military sense.
The money will still pour in.
The West need a strong anti-terrorist ally in Pakistan.
That means tough choices.

The money could stop then we can watch another state descend into civil war.

UK will not be far behind after that due to too many UK-Pakistan family links.

Terror will rule.

We're all doomed!

Anyone else see the parade of lawyers being beaten up and hauled away in busses this morning? Gave me mixed feelings. On the one hand it is a despicable display of a dictatorship trampling all over the rule of law ...

... on the other hand, it is still lawyers getting beaten up.

This whole Pakistan mess is, of course, all our fault. If we had handled partition a bit better ... and then, as LTNS so eloquently puts it, the stinking corrupt AmericanBushClan is completely to blame as well. It's all their fault. And the Pope. And the ICCB. And Jonathan Ross ... he's got a hand in this mess, too, I'd warrant.

And so it goes:
quote:
Dozens of Pakistani security forces policing a former tourist haven surrendered to militants yesterday, raising the stakes in the country’s political crisis. The police officers and troops, outnumbered and demoralised, laid down their arms before hundreds of pro-Taleban extremists who are imposing Islamic law in an area beloved of Western hikers.
here

So so far we have this suspension of the constitution supposedly to enable the fight against extremism lead to the suspension and detention of judges, lawyers as well as opposition leaders - not to mention human rights activists and the surrender to pro-Taliban extremists.

Have you read the link LTNS? The article claims that Musharraf's forces have surrendered to the pro-Taliban forces.

From Mariam's link:
quote:
Television and music have been banned, barbers ordered not to shave beards and the militants have urged schoolgirls to wear all-covering burkas. They have warned women that their marriages would be annulled if they did not force their husbands to grow beards. Several development organisations have been forced to close their offices, accused of spreading immorality because they employed women staff.
No wonder so many trendy lefties today, forged in the protests of the sixties, are so keen to excuse these Neaderthals - they both have an obsession with sex and hair.
quote:
She asks me why
I'm just a hairy guy
I'm hairy noon and night
Hair that's a fright
I'm hairy high and low

US lawyers and members of the judicary are prepared to march in support of their Pakistani colleagues. I wonder if our illustrious members of the British law societies and chambers are prepared to do as much?

So he has set the election dates ... but without lifting the military rule and the current state of emergency, one can but wonder how free those elections are going to be.

Well, let's put it this way, if opposition leaders are prevented from speaking publicly ...

Then again ... one cannot but help wondering how conducive this is:

PAKISTAN'S military ruler has amended a law to give army courts sweeping powers to try civilians on charges from treason to inciting public unrest.

Beards should be optional. One instinctively distrusts any regime that tries to say otherwise.I once worked in a nursing home where the rather odd Matron had fallen out with the Handyman..as he had a beard, she tried to BAN beards. One of the male care staff promptly started growing a beard, and stood his ground to make an issue of it - but then the owner, unaware of all this, turned up one day with a beard. The daft Matron dropped her campaign like a hot brick.

The poll results should be fascinating
quote:
parliament would be dissolved on Thursday and elections held by January 9, but emergency rule would stay in place until the polls were held.
here

Musharraf claims that the state of emergency is necessary in order to fight extremism. His actual words quoted are "The emergency contributes toward better law and order and a better fight against terrorism ..." Maybe he is right ... it all depends on what you view as terrorism I suppose.
quote:
Pro-Taliban fighters have advanced in recent days and government officials say they now control as much as 70 per cent of the valley, just a few hours' drive from Islamabad.
