Saw this and I had to laugh. Makes one wonder why these laws were passed in the first place. For example #3. There must be an interesting story behind that one.

"3. In Liverpool, it is illegal for a woman to be topless except as a clerk in a tropical fish store (six percent)"

Some of them are ludicrous aren't they.

From now on all my postage stamps will go on upside down treason!

Is it true all Hackney carriage licence holders must put fresh straw on the floor every morning?

Not a bad idea in Brighton

Lovely stuff, Camelot. I`d never heard the one about it being OK in York to kill a Scotsman (if he`s armed with bow & arrows), but there`s a similar ancient law that in the city of Chester it`s OK to kill a Welshman in the same circs.
The one about the straw in hackney carriages that goes back to the horse-drawn carriages - as I heard it years ago it was hay, not straw, and the law was to ensure there was food for the poor often overworked horse! Also, apparently, this is where the term `hack` comes from. A lot of these old bye-laws never actually got removed from the statute books because there was no need as they were superseded by the law of the land.

Row faster, slaves! Caesar wants to waterski!
