I`ve had a few (5)days of my `holiday`, and I`ve been so very domesticated. I have enjoyed the appreciative feedback from the menfolks, and from my grand-daughter when she`s here. I`ve had a lovely log fire every day from late afternoon, I`ve done heaps of laundry and dried it by the fire or on radiators so the whole house smells of clean washing and a very slight occasional whiff of woodsmoke. I`ve done `special` meals every day, taken daughter shopping twice, and done well over half of the backlog of sewing jobs whilst waiting in for on-line Christmas shopping deliveries. I`ve had Mandy-next-door round for a couple of glasses of port and a bit of neighbourliness, I`ve brushed my old Benny-dog to the point where he avoids me when I`m not cooking or cleaning, and I`ve shifted stuff around the house doing the `tidy` thing.
I`ll be back at work a week today.
I read Miriams post in response to my `what do you call a holiday?` thread, the bit about the knitting machine got to me. I went upstairs and took a look at mine. I had it all set up in the spare bedroom a few years ago when I`d a lot of time on my hands being treated for breast cancer. Getting back to work, and then my grand-daughter getting to spend half her time here, meant the knitting machine getting stood on its end, and an old gateleg table taking up most of the space in the room, bearing a doll`s` house and its garden taking up the whole surface with both leaves up. That garden is a joint project, I play unashamedly and relish the time we share there, and my knitting machine waits in the wings...maybe till my Little Treasure wants to share that interest - or just get me into making `fashion- knitty` things for her. It`ll keep. Bottom line...another seven days. I`m getting twitchy already Retirement will be different.(though I`ve already decided I`ll work part-time, health etc. permitting) I`m NOT a domestic goddess. I sometimes identify with Father Ted`s Mrs Doyle, as I live with menfolk who are dear sweet chaps but can barely open a tin or boil a kettle - except that I DO Rebel occasionally. Before the week`s out I`ll probably tell the menfolks that we can order a Chinese or they can soddoff to the chippie and I`ll be happy with chopped tomatoes on wholemeal toast (my diet, y`know) Before the week`s out I`ll be feeling quite ready to get back to work. Until the day before. THEN I`ll really regret that my holiday is over - but, if I`m honest, it`s only because I`ve got to get up at 6am to be there. Once I`m there, it`s ok, it really is.

O Mim, thankyou, and dear friend you are to me too. There`s `friends & neighbours` but there you have to keep a balance or you can get over-run. There`s `friends at work`, but those after promotion have their own little agenda, yet the real friends there are the ones who keep you sane while you keep them sane..I do treasure those few.
There`s Old Friends, too, the ones that go waaaay back. A few of those sort of friends you could never lose, because whatever happens they don`t lose you, and they hang in there determined never to lose touch - maybe lapse for a bit but then there they are again. Last week a very dear friend from our Viking Re-enactment days just turned up here, out of the blue, didn`t even know Hubby had died. And it was just like we`d not been out of touch at all,let alone for nearly 4 years could always just say Anything, and that hasn`t changed at all.. With some folks you can just pick up the bits exactly where you left off. Another dear friend from nurse-training days, she lives halfway across the country now, but her parents are here so she visits regularly. She popped in here recently for a visit too. Same thing applies. Mim, I count you among these Friends, though we`ve never met, yet, I count you among the folks I know and love and trust. |
