Barack Obama
and John Edwards both beat H.Clinton.

BornInHove claimed Clinton will be the winner
how very wrong he is.

Huckabee is the Republican winner.

If Obama becomes the nomination then the US is heading for another republican administration. Think of all the hick states that make up the centre of the US - They will NEVER vote for a black guy. Couple that with the 'vehicle checks' and general intimidation that spring up around black areas on polling day and you have a guy that is a lame duck to be president.
The republicans must be rubbing their hands with glee over this result.

Maybe not, No Expert...I was as surprised as any one by this admittedly small time win...but there is a growing discontent here among all but the very, very wealthy. Hilary may be done in by her vote on the Iraq war…and her association with the past. (Perhaps wrongly so, I admit). In any event chalk one up for the Black guy this time. Ironically, polls taken among Black voters here and around the country show Hilary as the strong favorite. There were even comments from some that Obama is not “Black enough” alluding to his mixed race parentage I guess.

People want change...and they will want it even more when the (cough) "mild recession" hits the heartland here. Republicans here in my leafy suburb are worried that any Democratic candidates for local office may be carried into office by the presidential race...they have, in effect, already conceded the race to whoever is the eventual Democrat candidate.

He may be the best candidate for President but without huge financial backing by American corporations he will fail.
Its American corporations that run the Whitehouse and Capital hill it always has been, the president is just their front man....

You are arrogant because you believe you do not have to back your assertions, which is the perfect irony of your statement.

Obama is likely to stand a chance of winning based on how crap the Republican candidates are. He also possesses strong support from the 18 - 25s Internet generation, which if strongly motivated enough will make a difference. After 8 years of Bush, I believe the motivation exists.

One would have thought that the lack of dynastic overtones, which certainly cannot be ruled out in the case of Hilary Clinton, to be a bonus.

I remember as a young child seeing John Kennedy on next door`s telly (we didn`t have one then, and I used to watch Children`s Hour next door. The telly usually went off straight after that, but there was this face who didn`t look like the boring `old` faces that came on when kid`s telly was over.) Later, I remember feeling utterly devastated watching the news of his assassination.
I`m still an optimist at heart, really, but I still can`t help feeling that Obama`s life expectancy will be better if he doesn`t get elected President....

Funny you should think back on that Fluffy ... I was living in Holland at the time and I remember seeing JFK on my grandmother's television (we didn't have one either). I also remember feeling utterly devastated watching all the news about his assassination.

To be honest, I would much rather see a President Obama than a President Clinton, it's just I think it is unwise to underestimate the power of the Clinton 'machine' and the depth of its organisation. I may well be wrong (and subsequently more deserving of LTNS's sneers) but I think that in the next couple of weeks we are going to see some pretty negative crap flung Obama's way - and not from the Republican side. How much will stick is another matter, but I wouldn't underestimate Clinton's determination and ruthlessness yet.

New Hampshire, Tuesday, should show how things are likely to go. Obama is polling ahead of Clinton there. She seems so yesterday - so very Nineties - at a time when people are looking forward.

And if he does make it, all the nobody nutters with guns, and all the faceless folks with their own agendas, and too much power, enough to pin the blame on some nobody nutter with a gun. And the next generation of conspiracy theories is gestating right now...

I do think it`s a pity. Politics is a dirty game. I`ve little idea about American politics really, but the late Warren Zevon track `Lawyers, Guns & Money` is humming itself in my head as I type.
It`s a pity that the candidate `s skin colour and ethnic origin should be an issue at all, it`s a pity that the Clinton woman will surely pick up votes from women, especially those who identify with her as the `wronged wife`.. and lose votes because she`s not a man...
Too many outside issues clouding the fairly major issue of selecting a new US President.
Still, they can`t do much worse than the present incumbent, can they, whoever they pick!

It is a problem and will remain a problem as long as people will judge others on the basis of their ethnicity/gender/religion/sexuality/dietary preferences or any number of permutations thereof ... Once we mature enough, as a species, to be able to evaluate another purely on the basis of their deeds ... Well, maybe we will then be ready to move from our current state of scepticism and paranoia to one of acceptance and real advancement.

Yes, Mim, that`s true. I`m also thinking back to a little episode around the time of the last US Presidential Elections, the re-count etc.,
A whole bunch of us in Historical Re-enactment did a filming at Tatton Park, in Cheshire. (It was an advert for mobile phones) Great fun, unusually poor catering, but lots of Pythonesque humour abounded, loud ad libs then folks fell about in tucks of laughter, including the Director who was a young American on his first job over here, `twas a new experience for the chap altogether... When he`d asked for a count of Round shields and Kite shields, for the next take, and all extras had to stand still and be counted...dear little chap who was counting had to re-count, then some wag yelled out something about "you lot can`t count, y`ain`t even got a President yet!" (The Americans on that shoot were great, though, good folks who said they`d never had such a good crew and so many laughs.)
