Anticipating the complaints he is about to receive for introducing an "irrelevancy" into the discussion, Anubis thought a few might be interested:

Thirty years ago when collecting material for the dreaded thesis, a Jehovah's Witness mentioned to me that after "window cleaning" the most popular jobs the congregation members took were at M & S -- the reason being that it was M & S policy to give JWs preferential treatment when they were looking for staff. I decided to check this out, and visited the store manager, then in London Road, near where Woolworths is today. The manager confirmed I'd been correctly informed and added there had been a memo come from head office saying that JWs were honest, reliable people and were a good risk. I asked if she had a copy of the head office memo and she promised to look for me. Then I went to the Western Road branch -- again the story was confirmed. The manager wasn't sure about the memo, but assured me it was recognized recruitment policy. So I wrote to the head office .... and received a written response to say it was NOT M&S policy to show any preference to any group of people and to do so would be contrary to the law. I took this letter to the two Brighton branch managers; the Western Road one would not see me, the London Road one was very polite but informed me she had been told she must not discuss company policy with customers!

Not meaning to make a point from this tale .... as I said at the start, not really relevant to Paxman's pants -- but if it excites any readers, I can assure them Anubis still gets his pants (and jeans!) in M & S.

Many still go to M&S
simply because they do not go into other stores looking for the same products.

Paxman has Every Right
to Shout at that Cocky Jewish M&S CEO.

His Judaism is relevant? Are we to assume that had he not been Jewish he would not be cocky or maybe there is a special sort of cockiness that is specifically Jewish?

You are an ass LTNS ... there is a certain kind of asininity that permeates all your posts.

I have to say I don`t really have a problem with any particular firm giving preferential consideration to job applicants of any particular ethnic persuasion. OK, it`s positive discrimination, and now we`re all so pc the law won`t have it, but at the end of the day, would your local Asian corner shop not be justified in employing one of their own, rather than a `stranger`?
If M&S want to favour Jewish applicants, or did so in the past, I don`t see that as particularly bad.
I used to shop there for my undies, but some years ago found that there was less choice, and then found a little shop in our indoor market, a lady who would measure her customers properly, and was able to supply - to me, my daughter, and an older fosterling - bra`s that fitted properly. When this lady retired, I found that Asda had the best range and quality. Men`s undies, now it`s BHS.

Actually, I think you'll find that Anubis said they favoured Jehovah witnesses.

I do have a problem with 'positive discrimination'. It is as prejudiced as 'negative discrimination'. Where negative discrimination states that people of 'x' group cannot possibly be up to doing 'y'. Whereas positive discrimination effectively states that people of 'q' group can do 'z' only if given a helping hand.
