I think it has been that way for a long time. My old Mum used to say it started going downhill as soon as the University was built.
I think it was soon after that the Lyons Tea Establishment at the bottom of St James Street closed down. Went on to be the Job Centre. |

All this talk of real tea at Greggs, and here I am, sitting in my office with a cardboard cup of instant tea from the machine with partially-skimmed non-dairy milk substitute.

The London Road store is a Brighton Local branch.
No time for Bands down here Greggs are serving customers at this local branch.
Why ever not go for a brass band LTNS ... look they even got a heritage lottery fund grant for it. Heritage Lottery Fund: 16,335
Thinking about it, they could get some of that funding and refurbish the band stand on the seafront.
Brilliant idea. Forget the Greggs Tea Dome (older post)- The Greggs Tea Bandstand would really sort out the seafront.

Considering that this topic is streets ahead of the King Alfred one, it does make sense for the Greggs Tea Dome to subsidise the pools there, and also for the Brass Band to regenerate the Bandstand. This is just the sort of joined-up thinking that Labour always trumpeted (!) but never put into practice.
When continuing my field studies of the Greggs set-up, I asked an assistant what time they stopped selling the "breakfast menu" and he replied, "we sell it all day". So I said "you mean it becomes "afternoon tea", and he said, "no, it's breakfast in the afternoon".
I suppose this is what is meant by a 24/7 world. Greggs has its finger on the pulse (and the instrument valves). |

No, it is very good news that Greggs are going to help with the Bandstand, and its Brass Band will play some very good tunes there which will delight everybody and stop the traffic more quickly than the Greens could ever do.
Perhaps the band will get a bit avant garde and do a version of Charles Mingus's "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" as a Greggs special. |

That picture is a tribute to the cup that cheers.
I think that Greggs can be forgiven some of its sins for this welcome community initiative. Thanks goodness we see a builder's board on the Bandtsand at last.
Perhaps, when the work is complete, Greggs will provide a special, celebratory brew - and not invite Labour, who had hoped that the Bandstand would fall down.
And, well done, to the members of Greggs Baker Band for using their influence in this matter. It is a case of pulling a few strings (if that can be said of a brass band...). |

I have not got a clue why New Labour held back the Funding last year. |

Mrs Poppadum has just got back, and she said that the Wilburys - which she wanted for her father's birthday - have sold out in many Brighton stores (HMV, Virgin, Fopp). She was told that the record company is amazed at the demand, but the assistant also told her that almost every day for the past few years somebody has been in to ask if the Wilburys are available and so he was not surprised at the demand.
It's a great world when everybody is listening to the Wilburys.

What good news indeed about the Bandstand.
But let us hope that Greggs do us proud.
Bodfish and his mob were always going on about the "city" and all that but, when push came to shove, Greggs did not swallow all that spin, they looked at the hard facts and decided that the place was not suffciently upscale for one of its Bakers Oven shops. The nearest is in Haywards Heath.
But now that the new Council has grasped the nettle tea and done this Bandstand deal, it is obviously the place for the Bakers Oven incarnation of Greggs. |

| Yes, LTNS has been very modest about the way he spoke with the Greggs Bakery Band. |

Call that a band stand?
This is a band stand. We do things proper in the `Bourne.
Not that it matters. I'm moving back to Brighton on the weekend. |

For five of your British pounds in Eastbourne you can get infinite quality fair-trade tea and biscuits and tea dance to the wonderful keyboard tunes of Chris Mannion for three hours!
This by far is a superior offer to the Greggs 75p muck masquarading as 'tea'. Infinite tea for £5 is better value.

Oh we get that sort of thing all the time. That's why the sea is mined at the buoys. Makes a hell of a mess, but provides the town with enough meat for three months. |

Mrs Poppadum has just put her head round the door and said, "you're always at that computer! It's about time you got out and did something with that unruly herb garden, it's spoiling the view!"

Meanwhile, is there any Greggs music to download?
Surprised they have not advertised this in the London Road store.
If Fatboy Slim had more of clue, he would entering into the spirit of things by "sampling" the Greggs Baker Band next time he does one of his beach shows. This is obviously seen the way music is going.
Move over, Lily Allen, make way for Greggs! |

Here is the website for the Greggs Bakery Band.
You would not know they are bakers to look at them. Not a pasty in sight.

Perhaps this is a first - the grim reality of Greggs mentioned in a work of fiction. It is from a story about visiting a grand old lady.
Full story is at: http://www.decongested.com/story.php?id=38
With most of the old dears I speak to them in an extra loud voice, telling them what I'm doing. With Madame Malabar it was different, I felt I had to wait for her approval. So our mornings began with tea, Russian caravan, while she smoked a black Sobranie cigarette. Next, she would survey the house. "I think a little light dusting," she might say, or "Shoona," elongating my name to elegance, "would you refresh the bathroom today?" Once I asked whether she got meals on wheels. "Not exactly. An old friend brings a little something most afternoons. Brie, bread, olives, anchovies. I have simple tastes. Nothing heavy or cased in pastry." I thought of the Gregg's pasties lying in the bottom of my carrier bag and winced.

| Wow ... bugger Greggs, what a grand old lady indeed. Who wrote that piece? Yes, I know I can see the name of the author ... |
