That needs a bit more work to fit Youmans's melody!
Shouldn't take long. He and Irving Caesar wrote the original very quickly when an extra song was needed. |

Perhaps this is a first - the grim reality of Greggs mentioned in a work of fiction. It is from a story about visiting a grand old lady.
Full story is at: http://www.decongested.com/story.php?id=38
most of the old dears I speak to them in an extra loud voice, telling them what I'm doing. With Madame Malabar it was different, I felt I had to wait for her approval. So our mornings began with tea, Russian caravan, while she smoked a black Sobranie cigarette. Next, she would survey the house. "I think a little light dusting," she might say, or "Shoona," elongating my name to elegance, "would you refresh the bathroom today?" Once I asked whether she got meals on wheels. "Not exactly. An old friend brings a little something most afternoons. Brie, bread, olives, anchovies. I have simple tastes. Nothing heavy or cased in pastry." I thought of the Gregg's pasties lying in the bottom of my carrier bag and winced.

Wow ... bugger Greggs, what a grand old lady indeed. Who wrote that piece? Yes, I know I can see the name of the author ...[/quote]
Yes, a lucky discovery, that story. Well written. Will Martin Amis now use Greggs as a scene for the dark underbelly of contemporary England? |

What with the magnificent Knole, Sevenoaks is a far cry from the London Road, Brighton.
Fittingly, Greggs there is experimenting, successfully, with a different set-up.
It offers "starters of, say, seafood terrine in saffron jelly, wrapped in smoked salmon with saffron mayonnaise, or perhaps slow roasted pork belly with a pickled fennel salad and fennel puree. Main courses are instantly recognizable but stop short of earning that slightly dubious phrase of 'comfort food', however well meant. This may be food that comforts but it also is of a standard that demands attention. For proof of this keep an eye lifted for the grilled lamb cutlet with slow braised lamb stew and herb dumpling, confit of lamb shoulder, braised potato and carrot and swede puree. The continents are nicely bridged with a baked supreme of halibut on braised bok choi with crab, a potato and coriander cake and lemon grass sauce."
Not a pasty in sight! I do not know if this will ever reach the London Road, but it might well suit the Bandstand site.

At £77.- for two diners? Yep why not, it is pretentious enough for Brighton |

| They will certainly feel that "frisson of international influence" over there when LTNS marches in, hands his anorak to the maitre d', and demands a 75p tea. |

| LTNS only has to forgo 103 cups of Greggs 75p tea - less than a third of a year if he buys one a day - and he will have enough for himself and somebody else to go the whole hog at the Sevenoaks branch of Greggs, and that will linger in the memory much more than all that daily swill. |

Tea at the Sevenoaks Greggs turns out to be £1.75 a cup.
Any customers drink it from the saucer could say that in fact Queen Victoria was known for doing so. |

Tea arouses some controversy in Canada, it turns out.
This man states this:
"Can someone please devise an appropriate social response to the act of putting a teabag in a cup, and adding hot water and milk in quick succession? Is grievous bodily harm justified? Bert Jenkins"
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/series/tea/feedback.html
Perhaps this explains why the London Road has the reputation it does? |

Yes, but what about the Canadian tea, that is the point. How does it compare with the London Road's?
As you avoid the subject, we can only assume that the Canadian tea is far better. |

What are you on about?
Tetley Tea is world class.
Even stores in St.James St ( the street that has false police on it - and Drunks) use Tetley Tea. |

I am on about tea. The subject of the Topic you started.
It has somehow now reached Canada.
What's more, you have mentioned now that you have been there, liked it, and tell us about the London buses which have ended up over there.
But you have not told us nothing yet about the tea in Canada. You have said something instead about St. James's Street, which is not in Canada (although I'm sure many people wish it could be sent there).
We are all eagerly awaiting enlightenment upon the merits or otherwise of the Canadian brew!
It is difficult to believe that you went without it across the pond. Or perhaps it was so dreaful, you had to do so.
In which case, Canada is not as Great as you say.

Look at the number of readers, of course it's "we", and the subject of the Topic is as much Tea (varying price) as it is London Road.
You are obviously harbouring a guilty secret about your Canadian tea experience. Much better spill the beans (as it were). You will feel much better for it. We are all friends here! |

Tea all over the World is Good due to Imports from the UK and India.
In a Borders Store Cafe in Hollywood LA, Calif., they did not know what to do with a Tea Bag. Americans grow up on coffee. |

You do know that "Americans" live on the other side of the border don't you? You have America and then Canada ... two separate countries, distinctly different and not to be confused with each other. |
