It is perhaps the ultimate paradox of the London Road that, at the top of it, there is one of the most expensive restaurants in Brighton and Hove, The Black Chapati which stands beneath an unalluring block.

Although it is more expensive than Greggs, it is far healthier. Indian food. No brown sauce, I believe.

Used to work in the building above the BC (vantage point) and the smell of onions and garlic cooking on a Friday avo was sublime.

I always pictured the Black Chapati to ber some sort of super hero too :)

What is a Friday avocado? Is it riper than Thursday's?

Or is this an office-life term?

Could be that there is a different dialect of English in Portslade.

London Road is clearly multicultural. But let us hope that the great Australian spirit is not spoilt by Greggs opening up there as well as its eccentric outlets in Belgium.

The Greggs effect is being felt elsewhere. Mayo was attacked at, of all places, the Vodaphone shareholders' meeting yesterday. Mayo is being shunned as chav all round.

I do not know if The Black Chapati is still on that bit of the London Road, but Mrs Poppadum's penchant for Indian food has certainly lumbered up with this name. Every time people came round, there were more of her curries, and so somebody said it's infinite poppadum here in Portslade.

When she gets going at the cooker, chillis in hand, there is a mad glint in her eyes, no loving nustles at the back of her neck will deflect her from the task in hand as nostrils flare while the garlic sweats

And now she has come home with a page from yesterday's Mail, crowing that she has been right all along. A Madras is all you need for a healthy life. "Tell that to Long Time No See when he goes on about his pasties!"

So I am passing on this advice.

The article says that fenugreek prevents breast cancer, and helps with bronchitis and diabetes and ulcers. Coriander is an antioxidant which works well on the colon. Turmeric eases cancer and Alzheimer's as well as arthritis and heart disease. NUTMEG BOOSTS THE MALE LIBIDO. Cinnamon lowers the blood-sugar levels. Fennel relieves period pains and bronchitis. Chilli - oddly enough - eases stomach ulcers and burns up fat and calories (even if it creates a queue outside the bathroom). Ginger also eases ulcers and arthritis. Cardamon helps indigestion, stomachs, sore throats, and is an anti-blood-clotting agent. Curry leaves lower cholesterol and weight, and also help with diabetes.

So there you have it, The Black Chapati might cost more than Greggs but you will live longer with this heath-giving, libido-boosting food rather than filling up on all of Sir Michael Darrington's stodge.

And, anyway, the floods are set to increase the cost of milk, so the 75p tea might leap in price... All the more reason to go for an Indian instead.

I think it was the Black Chapati that was famus for the poor attitude of the staff?

Heard something like that about Nia in North Laine but poor attitude of restaurant staff could probably fill a whole topic.
How about Greggs staff. Where are they on the scale of good/bad service ?

I would imagine very good.
Staff service is inversely proportional to the food quaity.

There is a type of sandwich in Ireland known as a shambo. There might be uproar if Greggs used the name in England.

What about St Patrick coming to London Road, Brighton ?
Would it be fair to say he might have a lot to do ?

Mysterious Greggsian forces at work here.

Apparently, according to the main page, the latest Greggs item was that LTNS had posted/done something at 17.25 but it is not here.

Has LTNS removed one of his creations? If so, does anybody remember what it was?

Perhaps GCHQ has been alerted to this? Could Greggs be cover for high-level international exchange of hush-hush information? A code none of us has cracked? Something o nwhich we have stumbled.

We are all perhaps caught up in something far more sinister than dubious pasties and should look carefully before leaving our front doors. Was that mention of Tottenham cakes inadvertent reference to something else? After all, look at that wartime case of the crossword-puzzle clues being linked with military/shipping moves...

And so this is perhaps why long time no see chose that name under which to operate.

Meanwhile, perhaps there are other reasons for Sir Michael Darrington to be going from branch to branch in the Bentley. Whose side is he on? Shadows and fog on the Tyne...

Who knows, we might yet find Emma Peel springing over the tuna baguettes in her leather trousers

LTNS does edits to his posts and changes nothing.

Then the thread goes to the top of the forum, and people look.
