It seems Lord Goldsmith is conducting a review on what it means to be British. Well, what it actually says is: quote: Lord Goldsmith, who stepped down as attorney general when Tony Blair left Downing Street in June, is conducting a review on the future of Britishness and citizenship.

We are such a long way away from what we must achieve if humanity is to survive --- there are still just two options, socialism or barbarism.
Nationalism and religion are just two of the superstructures that separate people one from the other and, in the final analysis, inevitably lead to conflict and massacre.
Only a moron could perceive being 'British' or 'French' or 'Persian' or 'Chinese' makes them in any way 'superior'. BUT if you can get people believing rubbish like this, it makes them much more malleable, much easier to 'manipulate', much more ready to go a kill the 'other fellow' ..... {what was the name of that Bogart film about prisoners escaping from Devil's island in a rubber boat, attacked by an enemy plane, and as on of the characters shoots down the plane with his carbine he exclaims, "We might be hoodlums, but we're American hoodlums!" Great stuff for the kid's movies .... but as a general rule, if someone asks you to vote for them because of their 'nationhood', find someone else to support. |

You are right, why should we. Free thinking people should be given a choice. That freedom of choice however, will always be under threat from those who wish to impose their way of thinking. Therefore the only choice may be one we like less. As long as the freedom of choice and the freedom to criticise is maintained that should work.
Dream on.

another has been blairite who has nothing better to do with their time other than try and prescribe notions of self-idenity. As if anyone give a toss about what this man thinks our national idenity is.
Modern Britian has moved on from songs and flags. |
