Yes the wonderful symbol of fair play and internationalism is marched through major capitals by a phalanx of storm troopers.

These demonstrations should be peaceful.
All of this shows a total disrespect of the Olympic movement (not that it helps its self much).

There is also too much focus on Tibet when there are many other issues of human rights in China.

Torch Put Out Twice and Put On Bus for Safety in Paris

So if the flame has been put out a couple of times to protect it from the protesters, then it's not really the same flame - It is "Le Flamme Zippo", n'est pas?

FREE TIBET!*

*also stop other human rights abuses

I agree DaveB, people should bow before the Olympic flame as it's past so as not to disrespect this holy symbol of merchandise and marketing.

Borninhove the Olympic movement didn't start the fire, it was always burning since the world's been turning.

Anyway they have back-up torches which were lit at the same time to contiune the 'flamne'

Not at all, that is not what it is meant to symbolise either.
The demonstrations actually helped no one.

Yes, but it strikes me as cheating.

Oh, and now I've got that (nearly) 20-year-old song in my head for the rest of the day:

Begin, Reagan, Palestine, Terror on the airline
Ayatollah's in Iran, Russians in Afghanistan

As with any symbol it is used for political purposes, either by the capitalist who use it to sell bottles of coke or the Chinise that use it to promote an 'image of China' to the Chinese people. You have to be rather naive to think it's all just about the sporting spirit.

In 2012 it will be used to sell London and UK tourism.

No people used to say that having a propane torch was cheating, but you have to move with the times. There are actually hundreads of Olympic flames now in existance, in fact it is rumoured that shortly after 2012 the number of Olympic flames will outnumber conventional flames by a ration of 2-1

Yep, at least the protesters are honest in their political intentions. Unlike China who back up their claim it is all about sporting by editing out any videos that show otherwise.

There was an interesting articule on the beebs site about the history of the games being used as a political football.

But the flame must be naturally produced by the rubbing together of the thighs of virgins on Mount Olympus, or something, innit? You can't just go around blowing them out and relighting them willy-nilly - it spoils the whole tone of the seriousness of the games. I mean, when I sit down with my box of Kleenex to watch the beach volleyball, I don't want my experience ruined by a bunch of protesters causing the flame to blow out now, do I?

No the flame was burnt during the game, but the actual relay part of it was actually created by the Nazi's to celebrate the Third Reich (a knowledge of history increases one's sense of irony wonderfully).

It was meant to celebrate the theft of theft of fire from Zeus by Prometheus, but if you belive it's been kept buring all this time then sorry but it's a lie, like all that is good in this world.

Borninhove the rubbing together the thighs of young virgins creates far too moist an environment for flame, and if you are watching the flame during beach volleyball then you haven't 'got' this sport yet.
