The Starbucks is Bad news for the many Traders on St James St.
Soon the Somerfield goes to the North Rd small branch.
So another big Store will take that over. M&S Foods would do well. |

It would be a very strange thing if LTNS did post on his wife.
But, who knows, perhaps before she goes out each day he manages to put on her back a post-it note which says "Eat at Greggs. Avoid Starbucks."
Keep a look out for this on the London Road, Brighton. |

Pathetic. Just pathetic.
If St James's St is anything like I remember it is a pretty grim part of town anyway, although there used to be a great record shop there - Tilbury Gig - anyone else remember that? Anyway, I bet if it was "Mrs Twees Olde Coyfee Shoppe" opening up or "Scream - Piercings and Tattoos" nobody would care. It's just that the word "Starbucks" sets off the old knee-jerk anti-Americanism and you get 'Facebook campaigns' complaining about it. It's NOT because it's a coffee shop, it's because it's a large American corporation.
Pathetic. |

Mim is right in that if people didn't go there then it wouldn't be popular. Then again Starbucks also do things like buyout local independent coffee shops or setup shop next to them and run stores at a loss to drive out profit.
Greggs’ gives 1% of its profit to charity which is a good thing, although they are very prolific in many northern towns and their logo is just as aesthetically annoying and garish as starbucks.
I prefer places with a bit of character and I also find the type of customer who goes to starbucks a bit pedestrian. I prefer to go to pubs and drink ale where the absence of teenagers, children and screaming babies is a bonus! Then again let us not romanticize the British café with the exception of a few excellent ones like Carrot’s Café they were hardly the best.

Jimmy Street was our main shopping area in the 60's/70's. It had a good mix of Big names and independents. I remember Tilbury Gig and spent quite some time there. Gizzi was the main restuarant/cafe. Used to frequent many ale houses around there.
These days I tend to avoid the area. |

Coffee & Tea shops have always baffled me somewhat. Why walk out of your house along the road and pay over the top for a coffee which you could have in the comfort of your own home?

One assumes that people might want coffee at times when they are not in their home and haven't heard of flasks.
People see these chain stores opening up everywhere and get annoyed that the character of the street is changing. People feel an ownership of their local high street and many people don't want to see it transformed into a bland mono-culture.
The idea is that these shops just sell products, whereas in reality they also have an active role in the formation of our social culture.
Personally I value character and individuality more than a guarantee of the standard of coffee or tea. People go there because they feel secure in doing so and they know what they are going to get.
I prefer the excitement of going into independent establishments, as sometimes the experience they can offer can be truly exceptional.
I think Starbucks stands for the type of development that is out of touch with the existing community and culture.

If Starbucks is out of touch then they will close. At the moment they seem to be rather successful, which would suggest they are very much in touch with the existing community and culture.
I would not know as I do ot frequent such places.

No they are in touch with supplying a product that meets the desires of the community. They are not in touch with the culture of the community. In fact they actually corrupt local culture through the promotion of consumerism. Across the world there are now these bland coffee shops which create bland people to sit in them.
Why not just sit in your house and invite some friends around for a cup of tea?
