For the first time for several years, just back from a pleasant break cruising the Rhine & Danube rivers. Included a couple of nights in Budapest -- where we took advantage of the recent legislation whereby all senior citizens of all countries within the European Union travel free on all public transport, trams, buses, railways, metros and undergrounds. No need for a special travel document -- you just show your passport. It all seemed too good to be true and there were a few apprehensions when the first pair of inspectors boarded our strassenbahn; we showed our passports, promptly returned to us with the comment, "Have a nice day!". (Incidentally, if you are a stranger to the city, you see more, more easily, on the trams than on any coach tour!)

It did leave me wondering .... now I wonder what the London bus driver would say to an old Hungarian who boarded the bus and flashed his passport .......?

Is that true, Anubis? if so, at what age does it start?

Myself and the memsahib are pretty close to 60, so here's hoping . . .

The memsahib may not be too pleased with you after revealing that. TB in the Doghouse?

It starts at age 65 years for FREE travel; if I remember right, from age 62 years you travel half price with an EU Passport. You can easily find all the confirming information if you look on the web for Budapest and go on the 'transport information' site, set up by the Budapest Transport office and written in perfect English, Incidentally, again for new visitors, English is WIDELY spoken in the capital and your fellow travellers need little encouragement to practice their linguistic skills on you! If you travel the route of the number 2 tram, you pass most important buildings in the capital. Similar concessions apply to museums, but if I remember right, you only guaranteed FREE entry at 70 years .....

It sounds very good. Perhaps we can learn how it is funded and compare it to the UK systems (especially Brighton) which appear to cause so much trouble.
