Saw it, looks like a religious clash is responsible, not an invasion.

The use of language. From Associated Press & Reuters.

Activists of the Jewish extremist right wing Temple Mount Faithful tear Palestinian flags next to a mock coffin symbolizing a Palestinian state during a demonstration in Jerusalem's Old City Wednesday May 16, 2007.

Palestinian Fatah gunmen take up their positions during clashes with Hamas gunmen at the street of Rafah camp in the southern Gaza strip, May 17, 2007.

Now call me old fashioned, but this does seem rather an interesting and selective use of the word "extremist".

Meanwhile, in northern Lebanon: From ITV
quote:
Lebanese troops are continuing to battle al-Qaeda-linked militants at a Palestinian refugee camp for a second day.
And from the Guardian
quote:
Lebanese troops today shelled a Palestinian refugee camp, a day after more than 55 people were killed in fighting between Sunni militants and government forces. Tank shells crashed into the coastal camp of Nahr el-Bared, home to some 40,000 refugees, near the northern city of Tripoli. Plumes of smoke rose into the sky as fighters of the little-known Fatah al-Islam group fired grenades and machineguns at army posts on the camp perimeter, witnesses said.
The Telegraph is a little less coy, however:
quote:
While al-Qa'eda has struggled to establish itself among Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, yesterday's violence in Lebanon suggests that the Palestinian diaspora is more receptive to the jihadist creed. Fatah al-Islam is tiny - estimated to have just 200 members - and fiercely religious, advocating a militant Islamic agenda of violence not just against Jews in the Holy Land but all "infidels", which includes Muslims who do not support its radical agenda.

The violence yesterday could be interpreted as an attempt to sabotage international efforts, led by the United Nations, to set up a tribunal to try those responsible for the Valentine's Day 2005 assassination of Rafik Hariri, the former prime minister of Lebanon who dared to stand up to Damascus. The Syrian regime has been implicated in Mr Hariri's death and, while it denies involvement, it opposes the creation of a UN tribunal into the murder. It might be that the jihadists of Fatah al-Islam were used in a violent and desperate attempt to scupper the tribunal plans.

Crikey! Steady on there, Telegraph, you'll be using the "t"-word next! Still, none of them are extremists, obviously, unlike those despicable extremist octogenarians in the first photo. Now what could the difference be, I wonder?

Meanwhile, the Lebanese newspaper AL-MUSTAQBAL is pulling no punches:
quote:
There is no doubt that the attack by the Fatah al-Islam terrorist gang was prompted by the craziness of the Syrian regime and its affiliates regarding the approach of the Security Council's endorsement of the international tribunal... Yesterday's crime shows why it is key to seek the UN's protection.
Terrorist gang ... craziness ... crime? Good grief, have they never heard of political correctness over there. You have to say "militant", you know. You wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

It is no surprise as some factions in lebanon are pro USA, anti palestinian and anti Syrian.
The whole area is in a mess, best to blame the inhabitants as they are the ones screwing themselves up.
Of course we and the US are innocent of any involvement as BIH so often points out.

Yes it is all the fault of the baddies, while the goodies remain a font of Maha Karuna.

Immeasurable compassion is hardly an attribute of any in this conflict, and even the Bodhisattva seem to be facing their own trials and tribulations.

As to your comment that
quote:
Of course we and the US are innocent of any involvement as BIH so often points out.
isn't there a wee bit of difference between saying we are not 100% responsible for every killing in the region and saying we are innocent of any involvement? And anyway, avro, as a quoter of the Gautama, you should know that absolute innocence can only come with freedom from the three poisons of evil; greed, hatred and delusion. I am certainly not free of the first two, and you have repeatedly shown on the pages of this forum how badly you suffer from the third.

Only the enlightened can recognise their own delusion. True enlightenment is an illusion. Freedom from delusion is an illusion.

Knowing all in perfect truth without ego would probably be fatal to most.

My reality is one in which both sides of a story are considered and those who only see one, such as yourself, are destined to wander the earth in a state of semi-blindness.

Meanwhile, the totally deluded and blind continue the carnage in the name of their gods, although in their minds they are the only ones who know the real truth and will kill to force that truth on all others.

Since Hamas decided to deal with their battle with Fatah in Gaza by launching rockets at Israel, over 150 rockets have been fired indescriminately. Last night one hit the car of 32-year-old Shirel Freedman as she was driving home from work and killed her.

What will today bring?

BIH, how interested you are in israeli casualties, even by name, no such
interest is shown by you to innocent pelestinian dead or injured?

today will bring more of the same.
Palestinian indiscriminate bombing of israel and discriminate Israeli
bombing of Gaza.

One day the palestinians will have to jack it in and make the best
of how it really is.

Yes, avro, I do tend to look at things from the Israeli side. There is plenty of coverage of the Palestinian side in the media. I think they do a perfectly good job of covering that. And then there are those such as yourself who are ever eager to present the Palestinian side and deride the Israelis.

BIH. yes, I feel for the underdog.
But there comes a moment for the underdog
to stop resisting an obviouse superiour force.

I am sure from my experience on these threads
that we would jack it in and make a compromise
to a superiour force.

This makes sense. Why the palestinians do not surrender
to obviouse superiour domination
is a mistery to us.

The palestinians are mad not to give in and their madness isolates them.

I feel really sorry for them, but they seem to be doomed by the western democracies.

Palestinians have huge gas reserves off the Gaza coast.

The multinational natural gas giant British Gas Group signed a contract with the Palestinian Authority in 1999 to develop the 1 trillion cubic foot reserve, with Israel a likely customer. However, over the past year negotiations with Israel have failed, and British Gas has turned to Egypt.

You know, what really gets me is that if Israel was really interested in making life impossible for the Gaza strip all it would have to do is turn of the electricity and stop supplying them with water. Israel is in no way blameless, I'd be a fool to try and pretend otherwise. In the past it has over-reacted to provocation and ... from a purely propaganda point of view thought not necessarily from a national security point of view ... pre-emptive actions have not always been advisable.

I think the thing that worries me at the moment more then anything is that the relentless struggle has finally brought us to the point where the general view in Israel is becoming more extreme. Where the generation that remembers the reality of being a displaced people is gradually dieing off and the vocal majority become increasingly those that remember nothing but the struggle for peace nationalism is a natural byproduct. I'm very much afraid that this is becoming an increasingly militant nationalism. And the current primarily extreme right government is very much reflective thereof.

Mir, Meanwhile, Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip after an Israeli soldier was captured in June has devastated the economy there, and the bombing of the area's only electrical power plant has left Gaza largely without power or water.

BG is hoping to secure a 15- to 20-year contract to supply Israel with gas from its Gaza Marine field, which is controlled by the Palestinian Authority, off the coast of the Gaza Strip.

Yes, Hamas have taken over the Gaza Strip - for now. One report I read had a jubilant young 'militant' rejoicing at the fact that now they can install a 'proper Islamic State' in Gaza. If I owned a barber's shop, music or DVD/Video store I would be feeling very worried. And Gaza's women?

But where is the outrage?

Israel killing 'militants' = Outrage
'Militants' killing 'militants' = ... ... ... Sound of crickets chirping ... ... ...

Next expect Fatah to attack Hamas throughout the West Bank.

Doubt it Nightbird, when all is said and done this infighting does not only not bode well for the Palestinians, it certainly does nothing towards resolving the issues of the area.
