Ouch!

Meanwhile, beards are being shaken at the Cannes film festival at the premier of Persepolis, the animated movie based on one of my favourite books of the past few years, Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel about growing up in Iran after the Islamic revolution. This wonderful book tells Marjane's story in simple, black and white drawings and deal with the upheaval that the revolution caused in a little girl's life. A letter written to the organizers of the Cannes film festival reads:
quote:
"This year the Cannes Film Festival, in an unconventional and unsuitable act, has chosen a movie about Iran that has presented an unrealistic face of the achievements and results of the glorious Islamic Revolution in some of its parts,"
Unrealistic? This was her life. OK, it is a cartoon so that does make it 'unrealistic', but still ...

Read 'Iran Awakening' by Shirin Ebadi and see how "unrealistic" it is.

If we had laws like that binge drinking would not be so popular.

There must be a law against drinking alcohol in Iran, like in Saudi?

Interestingly, when I lived in Saudi I used to watch the English-language national TV channel, Saudi 2 (riveting stuff, let me tell you) and one of my favourite shows was the "ask the imam" show, where viewers wrote in questions about Islam. I nearly fell of the sofa in astonishment one week when the question of alcohol came up and the guy said "Basically, if the non-believer makes alcohol in their house, drinks it in their house and does not go out in public drunk, then no law has been broken." Meanwhile, under my kitchen sink a water-cooler bottle full of grape juice, sugar and yeast was bubbling away. Hurrah! I wasn't, according to this guy, breaking the law.

However, public drunkeness was another matter altogether, and this guy in Iran was drinking the beer outside. And in Saudi there is a vast difference between having a quiet glass of home-brewed wine at home and going to a party, as these 433 foreigners arrested at a party in Jeddah by the religious police a couple of months ago found out:

Ouch!

Ouch!

Seems like the police haven't given up harrassing the women of Teheran, yet.
quote:
A shopkeeper in 7-Tir square in Tehran mentioned later “The officers questioned three girls, aged 25- 30, for their veils. The questioning was so harsh that they reacted. A female officer started pulling a girl’s hand to get her in the police patrol, but she refused. Then, a male officer attacked the girl. That was when others got involved. The girls were taken away by passing cars safe from the police. They got into civilian cars while they had no covering and their cloths were torn away. A taxi driver also said “In the morning, while the police was brutally questioning a girl, her cries for help enraged other people”. He also said that when the second incident happened, a mother and daughter were hit by the Police. While showing their injured faces to the people, they took off their veils. The two ladies have reportedly captured the incident on tape. Taking off their veils when the Police questions them for improper veils is becoming a trend in Iran. A similar incident, ten days ago, was caught on tape and posted on Youtube.

I suppose it is one way to fight back. I'm sorry, but in my view there is nothing more despicable than a man who hits a woman. What sort of deep, psychotic insecurity do you need to suffer from that would make you HIT a woman for showing half an inch of hair? Speaking to her - fine, but actually hitting her? Cowardly, despicable scum.

Now, cue the LTNS post accusing me of racism for pointing this out.

Though I accept the right of people to determine what is or is not acceptable conduct within their own society, the type of over-reaction that we see by the morality police is despicable conduct. It is my understanding that it is not Islamic but cultural abuse of power that will eventually lead to its own downfall.

The resistance is growing by the looks of things and it would seem that the swell of popular feeling is in support of the women.

This problem does not seem to be so wide spread in Saudi.
Maybe a significant proportion of the population of iran are persian and not arab
this lends them to be not so islam fanatic?
Geneticly the iranians are more advanced than us Brits?

I would suggest that the problem is not so publised in Saudi as it is in Iran, perhaps because young Iranians especially have taken to the Internet and blogging in particular as a means of publicizing information about what is happening in their country. Also, Saudi, unlike Iran, does not have a liberal past when women were freer to choose what they wore. Before the Islamic Revolution, Iranian women had a lot more freedom whereas Saudi women have traditionally always worn more concealing clothing - a trend that has now been spread via Saudi money to Muslim communities worldwide, despite their own traditions.

Apart from the fact that I tend to spell better then you do, have you really any substance to that claim of yours or is it just some more of your insanity.

What a waste of space you are Avro. Not only do you fail to contribute anything, you aren't even witty with your failure.

Oopps, happy days ahead?

Nine US warships carrying 17,000 personnel have entered the Gulf in a show of force off Iran's coast.

Navy officials said on Wednesday that this was the largest daytime assembly of ships since the 2003 Iraq war.

In what sense are they worse? They attempt to introduce a very fundamental interpretation of Islam throughout Islamic communities world-wide aided and abetted by their oil revenue. Does the attempt at spreading the Wahhabi school of Islamic thought necessarily make them worse?
