A slightly more accurate way of putting it would be if we were better at pursuing peace, the world would be a better place. Trouble is it is in man's nature to be galvanised by the spirit of competition and that shows no where better then in the pursuit of war.

It is better to pursue peace and lesuire rather than work and war. There will always be some good things that come from the bad. Like metal dectors to find treasure but I still reackon we would be better off without the wars and the technology.

So all those that died defending against Nazi Germany wasted their lives so you are able to protest against war?

No they didn't. It would however be nice if people could come togther and motivate themselves to create a better world without the threat of a Nazi invasion.

Fightin in Iraq isn't like defending freedom against Nazi's becuase it's an illegal agressive war.

Not all EDO's products will exclusively be used in Iraq. The UK could be invaded by a hostile enemy in which case we'd need to defend ourselves. Lets face it, when push comes to shove, flower guns just aren't going to cut the mustard are they?

I'd prefer EDO protesters to vent their spleens at those whose policies have led to EDO's products being used in dubious conflicts rather than harrassing employees of a company whose products may one day save our lives, freedom blah blah blah.....

Ah but Martha ... you are missing the point. Those valiants protesters are merely emulating the methods they are protesting against by going to the soft defenceless underbelly (which is powerless to effect any change anyway).

After all, you must admit it is far easier to throw a doll spattered with red paint in the path of some poor woman trying to get home after work then it is to actually try and argue the case in board rooms. Aside from the fact that it gets them in the newspapers which, under the ruling that no publicity is bad publicity - or any publicity is better then no publicity even.

No, not all their products are involved in Iraq but they are still willing selling their products with the knowledge that they will be used there.

People have a right to protest and should be able to do so without the risk of arrest or accusations of harassment. There are some protesters who in my opinion don't use the best methods to state their case but to say that they are all 'harassing' employees is unfair. There is a difference between a legal protest against a company and harassing individual workers. I find the later unacceptable.

Although you can argue that we need arms to safeguard our so called 'freedom' it is also very easy to show how the international arms trade helps contribute to conflicts by sparking arms races etc.

Costa Rica does very nicely without any military and since abolishing it's military has been void of the civil wars that has afflicted it's neighboring countries. This is how societies will cope once man has developed sufficient intelligence to forego the folly of war.

Human nature being in general rather primitive.
The intelligent will die out and the thick mob will rule.
Unless the intelligent can harness the mob to do its bidding.

This is how religions gained power.
This is how all great empires were built.

You will never convince all that being green, peaceful and humane is the way forward.
There will always be someone who takes advantage of the good will.

If this country is to survive we will need nuclear power stations and large armed forces to protect our shores.
The oil will run out and chaos will ensue.
Prepare now.

Indeed, but how does one marry that pragmatism with some hope?

Most of the population will have been drowned in great storms and floods caused by global warming.
Those that survived the wave of suicide bombers of the world religious war that is.
Some will have fallen foul of the bird flu and MRSA plague.

Nature will find a way.

It seems that the way to marry Daveb's pragmatism with some hope is the engage in a form of apocalyptic thinking

There is always a nice cup of tea!

Greggs has a fine establishment at Worlds End.
There is also Taj, The Famine Cafe and The Pestilence Tea Emporium.

The four Tea Shops of the Apocalypse

Is that Miriam's vision of the end of the World, not a branch of Greggs in sight?

Much preferable don't you think ... spinning towards the end with the mellow tones of Long John Baldry rather then to the clink of plastic spoons in polystyrene mugs .... even if it is with 'real milk'

Perhaps the LibDems will increase their chances by promising to deploy "smart bombs" to rid the country of the branches of Greggs and leave everything else standing.

Alas we are Doomed!
Build the nuclear power stations, sea defences and plan to become self sufficient.
Then let the tea making begin.
