Again another instance of much talk but little action on the part of public services.

Now I`m seriously thinking about this one. I`d just assumed it was the binmen being a bit daft, or being `jobsworth`, but I`m usually not around when they come and collect, so never actually asked them. I`ll try to do this, as I`m off next collection day. I`d just assumed it was the same sort of thing as my late hubby, or my son, putting stuff in the washing machine, but with very little idea of what Fabrics could be put together. I`ll have a little chat with the collectors...then maybe ring the council recycle helpline. I suppose I should have done this sooner...

Talks of a 10p tax on plastic bags, why don't we ban plastic altogether and go back to those old brown paper bags ?

There should also be a banning of those polystyrene trays in which shops serve up take-away chips.

What happened to the fine art of twisting paper sheets and shovelling the chips into them?

Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire has noew banned bag, making it the biggest place in Europe to do so. Many Friends of the Earths groups are trying to lobby local buisness to do so.

It's time the government should take action because at the moment this is all happening from the grass roots. Just goes to show how out of touch politiancs are to the poltical mood sometimes.

Getting rid of bags is something everyone could do and feel good about themselves and each other. There are plenty of good alternatives that don't split, nor do they cut into your hands in such a painfull way!

Here is a report of the many places which are stopping bags after Modbury showed that it can be done.

Still no news of Brighton, though...

I`ve recently returned from a lovely week in Devon, where I had the pleasure of shopping in Modbury.
I used the rather natty Asda (98p) plastic-lined hessian shopping bags I`d bought up here. Good round ropey handles, and a nice square foldy shape. OK, they bear the Asda logo as well as the Fair Trade logo, but these bags were much admired by volunteers in the St. Luke`s Hospice Charity Shop in Modbury, where I bought several books. I expect they`ve all nipped off to their nearest Asda to get some by now

After five months, the Council is beginning to catch up with the Forum's ideas...

The Problem is we are paying for all bags
within our shopping Bill.

If they take away bags
everything should come down in price.

What ever happened to the good n faithful cardboard boxes in supermarkets in piles at the end of the tills? When I where a nipper one would go looking for the box whilst your mum was at the till, the cardboard boxes also then served as hours of entertainment when one got home a race car, tractor, spaceship, robots helmet, house until yu mum chucked it out but now we would recycle it again. Guess where not allowed boxes at supermarkets now due to H&S and we have been on the box handling training programme. Has anyone made a virtual cardboard box for kids yet? Nitendo Box, Cardboard box for the 360 or PSII?

Let`s be fair, Tesco and Asda are selling very cheap & practical shopping bags, and Tesco give a clubcard point for every bag that you re-use. The Tesco `finest` little black bag folds away to a 6 inch square with a press stud to keep it tidy, costs 49p, and is the best thing to buy & store your root veg in. Potatoes don`t go green in them, just fold the top over to keep out the light.

When Brighton & Hove ban plastic bags, will there be council wardens going around checking and handing out on the spot fine to people carrying them?

Plastic bags are one thing but what about all the other, unrecycalble plastic etc that supermarkets use in their packaging?

Marks & Spencer and Lidl are the worst offenders.

Never been keen on M&S. I know they like to be perceived as a `Quality` shop, but I used to feel that some folks who shopped there had to make a point of Letting It Be Known. The current TV advertising for M&S food also has an elitist air about it. Bloody irritating ads.

The plastic cartons used by Asda etc., for meat packaging are also just a nuisance. They`re always bigger than they need to be, and take up way too much space in freezer/fridge, AND they allow meat to dehydrate in the freezer.

I'm ashamed to admit that I have never shopped in M&S ... mainly because it always appeared as a shop that was way too pricey. But one thing I do do as a matter of course is repack everything before I put it in the freezer. Another thing I have been itching to do is leaving the unnecessary packaging at the supermarket. Quite aside from everything else, it makes the weekly shop so bulky ...

Yes a reporter on SkyNews today
bought some shopping from a M&S Food Store in London
showing how they have the worst packing of the lot.

Mim, a dear friend of mine in Northampton has recently started taking her shopping out of it`s wrappings AT THE CHECKOUT, and leaves the stuff there for them to deal with. The only meat she doesn`t unpack & re-wrap there herself is the minced beef.
I think more of us who re-wrap our shopping at home should start doing it right there in the supermarket, then they`d get the message.
The only reason we don`t do it is because we don`t want to hold up the queue....but then we could be giving the rest of the queue a cue, too?

Woman on the radio today said she does that at M&S and they're fine with it. I'm going to wear bycycle clips..Lager down the right leg, Coca Cola down the left, vodka down the pants... Will it sting?

So if ASDA or Lidl create a fuss I can always say that M&S don't mind ... My next big shop isn't due till the weekend. I'll let you know how I get on.

I should imagine you'll be alright NE ... For all I know it will sting but by the time those fumes hit you, you won't care ...

A Dad phoned in on the Radio 5 Debate on this subject
yesterday.
He said it is not fair with
his 16 year old son who works at the checkout,
saying he is just trying to do his job and these trouble makers
do not understand there is no room at the checkout for all this card.

It would make better sense
to take off all the card at Customer Services,
then no problem.
