Rats can, if sufficiently motivated, chew through the plastic of both compost bins AND dustbins.
I`ve seen a wheelie bin with a gnawed hole in the lid, belonging to a neighbour of my daughter.
BINS are more likely to have stuff to attract rats than compost bins. Cooked food, leftovers, chicken carcasses etc. Maybe even pasties! And when there`s a fortnight to go between bin emptying days it`s just asking for trouble.
Alan Titchmarsh - I rather like him, recently read his biog `Trowel & Error`.

The Bins here in Brighton
Block Rats - so long as they are closed, of course.

Now this is really valuable local news. Brighton's bins are different from bins everywhere else! We could start a Brighton Bin Company and sell those special Brighton (only) Bins to people around the country - the world will have to wait till we can get production up a bit more.

Imagine, no more unemployment, no more dole queues ... Brighton could become the very model of a fully gainfully employed city with its very own export and may even get a meritorious mention in "BINS WEEKLY" the bi-weekly magazine for all bin enthusiasts!).

These are big black wheelie bins. They should be rat-proof if they are closed. But, if the bin I`ve described to you was OPEN, then why would a rat bother to chew its way through the lid???

they have a right mess in some parts.

So which parts of Wales are you familiar with, LT? And do you REALLY believe that your wheelie bins are different to ours???

Miriam if people did not have a Issue
then we would all be boring and like mellow Americans.

Dr.Who is made in Wales
to save big money,
of course the first series and second were great.
But sadly it is now crap.
Sadly due to using so many bad guest writers
who lacked what the first 2 series had - meaning you would not guess the end.

So, LT, if your antipathy towards Wales and any familiarity you have with parts of Wales is based on this, it begs the question `Were you an extra or something, and did you get dumped?`
I`m a Dr. Who fan, as you know, so I`d jump to defend about the only recent TV worth watching...
As for Wales, you don`t get me defensive on that one, as I`m often the first to criticize the Parochial Welsh, and Wales itself needs no defence, thankyou. Lots of stuff gets filmed in Wales because of the scenery, and it`s cheaper than going afar like New Zealand!
Wales, like England, even YOUR patch of it LT, has it`s `problem` housing estates, it`s share just as you have anywhere of Socially Inadequates, Mess, and squalor. AND Rats!

Rats are every place,
London has millions of them
they love the underground, of course.

Housing Estates
yes they are every place.

But Wales has a big problem
now as they are not so many speaking welsh.
Due to the young going to Uni
etc.

So let me see if I can follow your reasoning here ... rats are a problem in Wales because they don't speak Welsh and the young go to Uni etc.?

Nowhere in England - or Wales - is anybody more than ten feet from a rat, who are much misunderstood creatures.

Are these Welsh rats? (All the Scottish ones are in Westminster.)

Aren't Brighton and Hove's wheelie bins made in Wiltshire? So much for local industry... it cannot be beyond the wit of these councillors to create a mould, pour in the gunge, let it dry - et voilą (what is the French for wheelie bin?)

I`d have to enlist the help of a proper Welsh speaker to translate that Mim, but I get the gist!

Rats, as pets, (kept in clean conditions and not having to wallow in human-made sewers and rubbish tips etc. to survive) are wonderful creatures. They are way more intelligent, clean-habited and more interactive with humans than Hamsters. They are fantastic pets, ideal for children. We had many pet rodents over the years when the kids were young - mice, hamsters, gerbils and RATS were by far the best rodent pet. Physically robust, quick to learn who`s who and naturally inclined to enjoy young human company. There was Snowy, first, then there was the best rat in the world - Our Alice.
Looked like a sewer rat, dominated 3 cats, delighted our fosterlings and their friends and lived to the age of 4.

I don't speak Welsh either Fluffy but an online translator assures me that what it says is "It is all your fault! You told the young that it was alright to go to university!"

It`s a very good age for a pet rat. Dunno how the wild ones fare.

Rats are becoming very popular as pets after the movie Ratatouille.

Children can feed them the especially tough leftovers from their Greggs purchases.

Nigel Planner , actor
is in Page 5 of the weekend section of todays argus.

He makes great points:

"I'm a non-believer when it comes to thinking
it's our responsibility when it comes to saving
enough egg cartoons or whatever.
I read somewhere there are 871 people in the world
who are actually in a position to change it environmentally.
They're the people who are big enough, rich enough, and important
enough to actually make the big decisions necessary.
Us as small individuals, I don't think we have much of a say.
I think those 871 individuals should wake up
and do something within their power."

He is Bang On Right.

To say he read something somewhere could mean just about anywhere ... a fairy tale, an urban myth as well as a well evidenced list. If he names them, I'll personally undertake to write to each and everyone of them and suggest they get their finger out. A vague 'read something somewhere' in itself is just a cop-out!
