Is there a bit missing from Miriam's post, or am I missing the point?

Can anybody name the 871 people? I doubt that Sir Michael Darrington is one of them.

Oops sorry, don't know how that happened but for some reason my response never posted. Have corrected it now ... Thanks CP.

I am not convinced that these so-called movers and shakers move and shake as much as they - and others - like to think. It gives them too much credence.

They wake up when they recognise a growing force created in all manner of small ways.

For example. Don't buy two packets of crisps a week and that is £50 a year. £500 over a decade - enough for a good holiday. Etc., etc.

When firms realise that they are losing that sort of money, they start to question their existence.

No more pasties!

If these are indeed the men and women that Nigel is referring to ... and nothing so far has indicated that they are (a vague read something somewhere is anything but explicit) then his conclusion, to wit the fact that he as a consumer need do nothing, is even less understandable. People that run large profit making corporations are not going to be swayed by 'the-good-of-the-planet' argument but if they see that consumers will not accept consumables that squander scarce resources - through over-packaging for instance - or will refuse to purchase manufactured or harvested goods that rely on exploitative practises ... well, then you are hitting them where it hurts and they may have a rethink.

They are not going to set standards unless they are forced to do so.

So I would say Bang on Wrong!

OK, Nigel Planer probably does have a point. LT cites the `big bosses of Tesco/Walmart etc. They`ve evidently taken notice of the Fair Trade lobby, as many FT products are now good sellers at these supermarkets.
This is healthy.
Next logical step is for `eco-nutters` placidly dumping all the excess packaging from their shopping at the store (customer services, preferably...)

Pathetic CEO
Headline Grabber he is.

M&S ,as You know, have the very worse non-green type
packing on their Food.
he has no Headlines on that MAJOR problem.

And he is Expanding Abroad again,
they failed on that, last time.

He could have spent that money on the best Eco Packing money
could buy.

This is just turrning the clock back twenty five years.
All supermarkets used to make a charge for carrier bags.
Deposits next?

What about the bag ladies??? How on earth can you effectively shout incomprehensibly at passing traffic and scare little children when holding your worldly possesions if you can't use plastic bags? This is a disaster!

Here is a report about the bags being banned in London. Looks more dynamic than the half-hearted Brighton Council effort.

But is it all just a sop? What about the other excess packaging? All those things in plastic trays...

This is good news indeed, Poppadum!
I`m pondering about WHY supermarkets use those large rigid plastic trays, especially for meat, when a vacuum sealed polythene wrapping would do so much better for carrying, fridge and freezer space at home, and less freezer burn risk.
I think it`s because they want to spread the meat out to make it look bigger and better...

Many reports today that the plastic bags will be banned in London.

How/when this works in practice not yet clear.

Let us hope it's a harbinger of trays etc being given the hoof.

Take the bags away
But make sure you give paper bags or something to replace it.
That is common sense.

What about people bringing their own bags? They want the shopping, let them provide the wherewithal to bring it home in.

Why ever not? So many shopping bags fold up small, the black 49p ones from Tesco even have a little press stud to keep them folded - and would easily fit into a meduim-sized handbag or a man`s jacket/coat pocket. That`s like saying that lunch-break shoppers wouldn`t have their purses/wallets handy either. They WOULD if they were going to nip out shopping though, wouldn`t they?

Yes, those foldaway 49p bags are one of Tesco's more ingenious productions.

If the Worker has a Bag - all is good.
But if the worker ,on a break, does not have a bag
the Store must supply a Paper Bag.
Simple.

Workers have a Busy time
How dare you say Lazy.

This is Simple
A Paper Bag is not a problem,
if a Shop does not want to do that
the Worker with Cash can cross the Road to the Shop that gives a Paper Bag.
FACT.

Next to be targeted ...

Actually, not all sandwiches are in plastic. Only those pre-assembled sandwiches are.
