Health insurance seems evil to me. I think if you're unfortunate to be born with something costly to treat, society as a whole should pick up the tab via taxes.

What happens on house,life insurance if you happen to have the wrong genetic make up, you dont't get any cover?
Like bookies insurance companies never loose this just allows them to discriminate more.

Ian makes the essential, crucial point -- and that's where logical argument/discussion should end.

The argument about what it'll do to insurance premiums is therefore trivial; yes it enables more easy identification of serious illness BUT at the same time introduces the possibilities of effective treatment and (eventual) elimination of these conditions. Think of the scores of "death sentance" illnesses of a century ago (had there been equivalent insurers about then!) .. that are no longer "death sentances".
