On first reading, I read it as new POOPY strategy...
I still believe there is hope for Afghanistan...a country which has potential for growth. And perhaps an oil pipeline or two. |

Well, there are several ifs, mostly to do with their southern neighbour.
If Pakistan has elections in January and if they elect a President brave enough to finally clear out the 'Tribal Areas' of the North West and get rid of the Taliban/Al Qaeda infestations there, then there may be hope. However, as long as gunmen can cross the border with impunity and carry out atrocities like executing 16-year-old boys for the "crime" of teaching English to his younger schoolmates, or bomb and kill anyone who dares teach a girl how to read and write, then there is not much hope. What seems to have worked in Iraq is basically bribing the tribal leaders to turn on the Islamist cut-throats - if the leaders can get their people to see a better future with education and progress rather than dreams of an impossible 7th century Caliphate then things might get better, but I'm not holding my breath. |
