I didn't find the article but merely pass it on. Most responses have been like TBs, the source of funding affects the research so it must be wrong. But it also affects the way people view it. Just because Exxon sponsered it does that mean it is wrong or that the people reading it are being biased against it because Exxon sponsered it? Facts are facts no matter who pays for them if they are presented as facts not changed or altered to fit an arguement.
Scientific theory is not fact, it is a model of best fit which best explains external phenomena. Global warming is not 'a fact' it is a theory which best explains what is happening and what is going to happen. This paper is also a theory which suggests there maybe another reason behind the phenomena ..... this paper is also not 'a fact'. Have you ever read the Bad Science Column in the Guardian. Although it's quite simplistic it does provide some interesting reading on the subject matter for lay people such as I assume we are (any climate scientist please come forth ) http://www.badscience.net/
and, may I add, Ben Goldacre personally and promptly responds to comments sent to him -- indeed it's worth looking at the Guardian just to check his column (and about to be published book) He's a medical doctor.
But Moon -- all facts are theories. There are no such entities as "proven facts". If you can't see that, help me out by providing me with a single 'fact' -- no tautologies, please! |

Of course it isn't. And while we're on the subject of generally accepted scientific theories that are crap, let's look at a few others:
The earth goes round the sun
Absolute rubbish. any sensible person can see that the sun moves across the sky. It's just an excuse to put taxes up.
The world is round
Another load of crap. Go down to the beach. look out. you can see the edge where the ships fall off. If the world was round, there'd be places where people walk upside-down. where are they?
It's just an excuse to put taxes up
The moon is made of rock, not green cheese
Of course it's made of green cheese. It's just too far away for us to see the colour properly. That's why they faked the moon landings.
It's just an excuse to put taxes up

TBquote: The world is round
Well, in fact it is not perfectly round. It is an oblate spheroid (with a bulge around the middle stopping it from being perfectly round).

There are 100 centimeters in a Metere. Triangles have three sides.
Or would you count these as Tautologies?
All Empirical data are facts, the theory that explains them is a theory. Global warmining is a theory that explain the empirical facts.
Ben Goldache is a judgmental twat that occasionally states the bleeding obvious. Comes out with sweeping statements that likens all humanities graduates as post-modernist and anti-science.
He’s an MD not a PhD and an actual scientist should be doing that column not a journalist.
