If Mugabe ignores all the rhetoric, which he has done up to now, from messers Bush, Brown, Kofee Anan, the UN, the European Community, Australia et al, then as I see it the only solution is armed intervention by the UN. But that won't happen so the whole exercise is back to square one.

the very last paragraph:
Many African leaders still see Mr Mugabe as a hero of the fight against colonialism and have been reluctant to criticise him in public.
There is a belief among some people that these leaders are privately sick of Mugabe. One correspondent from South Africa on the news this morning was saying that he believed that once the 'election' was over, and clearly seen to be unfair, they may move against him.

Yes very true TS, but no-one is going to be the first to step forward. It's all a question of intimidation. Further, neither the heads of the Army or Police are going to relinquish their positions. They have too much to loose, plus they may well be prosecuted for "crimes against humanity'. Don't forget the massacres of the Matebele in the Bulawayo. 20,000+ murdered with the full knowlege of the British Government who stood by and did nothing. Not forgetting Grace Mugabe who will probably loose everything.

SEVEN DAYS TO GO. Will Changarai pull out and leave it all to Mugabe, thereby saving many lives, OR, will he go on? This is really being between a rock and a hard place. All of this would never have happened if the International Community had acted promptly instead of sitting back spouting platitudes.

Very very sad but in view of the International Community sitting on its hands it was inevitable. What price Zimbabwe now?? Or should one say the Zimbabwe Peoples Republic of China.

What a lot of utter bo***cks. The African nations will now revert to argument over what to do next and eventually the whole thing will fizzle out. They are all sitting pretty in their respective countries, and nothing will happen. Forget the useless Mbeki. Mugabe and his henchmen are far too entrenched and realise that to give up power now they will end up in the Court of Human Rights. It is far too late to do anything now. Steps should have been taken YEARS ago. So it will drag on until Mugabe dies - which, heaven forbid, could be years, - and then one of his henchmen will take his place and the whole sorry story will begin all over again.

There are calls for the UN to enter Zimbabwe to restore peace. There is no war.
Parallels with other countries such as China and Iraq make it difficult to see why the UN should enter.
Just another dictatorship but for yet another Afican country with so much potenetial it is very sad.
Zimbabwe could have so much, the land is fertile and in these times of food shortages it could be much better used. Natural resources include coal, chromium ore, asbestos, gold, nickel, copper, iron ore, vanadium, lithium, tin, platinum group metals - All heading for China?

It should be remembered that of the fifty odd African countries that make up the Union, the greater majority are dictatorships, and whilst they have not dragged their respective countries to the level of Zimbabwe, their Human Rights programmes leave a great deal to be desired, and there are very few, if any, who can point a 'CLEAN FINGER' at Mugabe. The once 'breadbasket' of Africa is now a basket case.

More arguments and wool gathering but the sad fact is that no-one will condemn Mugabe outright. When you punch up the article below, take time to read the comments on the side of the item.

| My bet is that history and the plight of Sub Saharan Africans will show a direct link between PC and disaster. So long as we are afraid to be unPC, a real holocaust will continue. |

If only it was that simple NL. I think that there is a lot more to the plight of Sub Saharan Africans then a simple direct link between PC - a very unsuccessful attempt at reconstructing reality by restricting linguistic means of expression - and disaster.
I would say that on the whole if you want to boil it down to just one or two terms it is far more the case that it will show a direct link between greed and global capitalism. |
