Does Fluffy mean "real life" rather than "virtual"? That other Forum is bedlam, in the old sense of the word. |

Thanks, Dingo. I didn`t make myself clear there. Of course, I meant `real life` rather than `virtual`, when I said `there IS Life going on elsewhere too!` I know there are folks who work from home, and folks who can post on forums at work, when there`s a `lull`, but I`m one who doesn`t have that luxury, and post here in what I laughingly call my `free time`, off duty... And there`s plenty else to do in that time, that`s what I meant. I don`t feel the need to seek `bedlam` on other forums, because it`s bedlam enough at home so I never get the opportunity to be that bored!I`m having a few days` annual leave but it`s just as busy as work...while I`ve been posting here this evening I`ve done a pork roast with successful Crackling, and home made stuffing, got a nice log fire going, my Grand-daughter`s fed and hair brushed and nagged to persist through her homework and get her stuff ready for morning, and part of her homework, helped her make paper daffodils (!) ready for St.Davids` Day, March 1st... Do Irish, English or Scots grandmothers go through this trauma, I wonder? Also, I`ve fed and chucked the cat out twice, fed the dogs, briefly walked them then brushed the old hairy one, made a bread & butter pudding, and chucked the cat out again because she was after the pork crackling after apparently getting back in through a keyhole.... LIFE, Jim, or LT, maybe not as you know it..... |

And before you can say "Fluffy Sheep", Fluff, you'll reach retirement age ... and will find as I have done (after more than a decade in that 'realm') -- you'll have much less "free" time than you have now! Every evening I promise myself an "early night", but it never seems to happen -- there's always an article I haven't read, a letter I haven't finished, a note to a journal I haven't re-drafted, a film I haven't watched. True it's grand-kids (nine of them!) rather than kids ... but "retirement" seems as elusive as ever. Just remember what I say, when your turn comes -- although I'll not be around then .... Like you, looking at Livewire is a relaxing "add on" after everything else .... |

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A friendly dog can make older people feel less isolated -- and it appears to make little difference if that wagging tail belongs to a robot doggie or the real thing.

Maybe I shouldn't take your 'harmless'(?) comment so seriously, Camelot ... but bearing in mind the tremendous research carried out in the USA, related to "elderly care", it's a pity you leave the feeling of mocking the issue ....

As the article makes clear, the "patients" were beyond any chance they could interact with the dogs, whether actual or virtual, and although just having something to look at, whatever it be, must make life better than looking at a blank wall.
Ellen Langer & Judith Rodin set the scene for their marvellous "field exercises" in care homes. Large equalized samples of elderly people, were given plants, cinema shows and numerous other additional amenities .... BUT in one condition they were just told what they'd be getting and in the other condition were asked to choose for themselves which plant they wanted, given the opportunity to tend it themselves, asked to decide when they saw the film etc., etc. Just a few weeks later, the two groups were assessed by independent (naive) "assessors" ... and it was the group who were able to actively participate in the decision-making process who scored highest for "alertness" and general "well-being". Although unexpected, the experimenters turned up at the homes exactly one year later ... to discover VERY significant differences in the 'death rates' during the previous year.
Even in the care home, it is possible not only to 'feed and water', but also, importantly, to allow a measure of "self-responsibility" ... and the evidence (much added to since Langer and Rodin) is clear: turning people into robots, even well cared for robots, is a sentence of an earlier death. |

Um, ....sorry? I was merely pointing out that in my case, and perhaps Fluffy's, a robot pet might take a bit less care, and therefore less time...

Anubis, thanks for that article & post. I spent several years working in an excellent nursing home for the elderly, where the owners put their ALL into keeping folks active-minded and interested. I also worked for a nursing agency which sent me to various other homes that were little better than `Granny Farms`. As a student nurse, my group were lectured by a great old Chinese geriatric consultant. He said care of the elderly is about `adding life to years rather than years to life`. Quality of life can be enhanced in so many small ways, and has to be a constant goal.
AS for saving time and effort spent on my animals by replacing them with robot pets... even children tire of the novelty of the robot kitten (my grand-daughter`s didn`t interest her for long) whereas the Real Thing has never stopped demanding her interaction - usually by trashing the doll`s house garden, taunting the old dog, attempts at food-stealing, and other getting up to no good... |

| There is nothing that can compare, long term, with the real life quirks that a flesh and blood animal brings to the relationship you have with them. |

Try having a parrot Rudy wakes me up in the morning demanding fresh water and food(fair play 10 am on the bloudy dot)5pm in the evening he will have his little screeching time(I mean singing) in two weeks I will have 3little cockatiels to rehome due to my birds having babies(I cannot have them here as Rudy will have them for breakfast )I may keep one of them but then I will have to have Rudy in the cage when it is out and vice versa when Rudy is out |

All I found in the members lists was that I appear to be in Discworld. How long have I been there? I hadn`t noticed till now... Regarding LTNS, I do hope he hasn`t left. I often disagree with him, but I agree with folks who say that the forum wouldn`t be the same without him. It wouldn`t. |

| Call me a conspiracy theorist if you like, but is it beyond the bounds of reason that pathetic corrupt Blair and Bush have finally had enough, contacted their freinds in the Intelligence services and arranged for a spot of rendition for LTNS? How will be cope behind bars, tormented by the promise of a pasty if he tells them everything he knows? |

Perhaps LTNS was right all along, there are forces at work in the universe, mysterious rays which transform the brain cells because it is now definitely the case that a word for a stronger form of "smelling" now appears on the screen here as "pathetic".
The Sanitation Dept would be puzzled if one rang up to complain "that drain is pathetic". |

Emigrating? So he'll soon be a pathetic American?
Sweet.
RIGHT! THAT's IT!! I have tried to type the word "steenking" (with the regular spelling) twice and some substitution filter has changed it to the word "pathetic". |
