There are 3 kinds of children growing up in the UK, and it`s been this way for quite a while. It`s not just about the family income, this applies across the range from the well-off to those living on benefits...

Those who have everything done for them.

Those who have very little done for them, but no constructive input to do anything - for themselves or for others. Generally poor souls we used to refer to as `dragged up`. Then we refer to them as `thugs`.

Those who have to do their bit - CHORES, from taking their turn at household or garden tasks, helping with younger siblings or elderly grandparents or neighbours, chores in the family business like farms, shops, catering (& chip-shops), Milk-rounds, or their own little jobs like paper-rounds. Even when there`s no real need for them to participate, they are brought up to do so. These are the fortunate ones.
But of course it can be overdone, in any income bracket. Too much can be put on kids who seem mature and capable. Right now, in the UK, there are too many children who are making `Care in the Community` work, by bearing responsibility that is unfairly heavy as carers for a disabled grandparent, parent or sibling.

Row faster, slaves! Caesar wants to waterski!
