I`m surprised nobody`s posted on this topic yet. And how appropriate, too, that it`s 5th November today... Sorry folks, I can`t do a link thing but I`m sure you can`t have missed it on the national news. Atherstone on Stour, vegetable packing plant. It doesn`t seem very long ago that firemen were taking industrial action, more to their own detriment than the publics`, and I recall having some heated debate on other forums supporting them. I recall someone posting that they didn`t think firemen had any gripe worse than police or ambulance crews...and I posted that police/ambulance crews at least have some idea what they are going to deal with, and that`s largely Joe public`s behaviour, whereas firemen never know from one shout to the next whether the building they`re trying to save is going to collapse - I`d rather take my chances with the public than a wall or roof attacking me. These men are Real Heroes,Full timers or Retained. They deserve more recognition for the work they do, even if it`s only waiting, being there and available for duty, when they get a call like this they put in more than ANY other public service.

A very tragic event that should not have happened, they only went into that inferno because they were told asylum seekers slept there having no where else to go. We shall see when they eventually clean the place out when the building is made safe, but like all things Fluffy we take them for granted until events like this...

| I know Fluffy and I am aware of being remiss ... however the fact remains that short of paying tribute to their dedication there is at this point very little to be added. |

It is a sad loss. They would not have entered the building if there was not a strong belief people were inside.
It is accountants I blame for all the cuts. They only see money being "wasted" when Fireman are sitting around all day when not called out. I really hope the people responsible for cuts in services have a dire need for them one day.
We need well trained, dedicated, well equiped Firemen. Same goes for all emergency services and armed forces. It is not a luxury, it is a much needed necessity.

Thanx Mim for acknowledging, but how many other topics do we labour here where there also isn`t much we can add? LT, OK, there`s an issue here about migrants allegedly in this place, and IF that can be proved it`ll be by the body count, and that may help in migrant worker investigations. If not, can we please bear in mind that the missing firemen did what firemen do, in these circs. As they always have, there on the spot they risk life and limb to at least try to save lives. Wecan blether on in the Negative Mode about PCSO`s. I had hoped for a more positive response for our firemen where there is opportunity for folks to make one. |
