Costs of blogging

It amazes me me that people (or should I say organisations) actually spend money blogging. This one, doesn't cost a penny. David Milliband outlines the costs of his blog at:

http://www.davidmiliband.defra.gov.uk/blogs/ministerial_blog/archive/2007/03/22/6237.aspx

It seems crazy to me that they spend public money when there is a perfectly good free alternative. Look at Brighton & Hove Council's rather naff councillor blogs. These cost a fair few thousand to set up, maintain and train. What a complete waste of money, when the free alternative is far better than the rather nasty looking council blogs. Worst still they don't allow comments - typical of the council that. As an already blogging councillor I was refused my request for a council blog - not sure why, probably because I was asking why it cost so much to set up the project.

But the joke is now on the council - as councillors can't use them during the election period, whereas I can keep on blogging!!

Wonderful blog there Elgood. Especially as you get to vet all the comments before they are posted.

Local newspaper writes about costs of consultants hired by Brighton & Hove Council.

There are many such costs which can be done away with.

I seem to remember that Brighton has a peace officer to promote world peace. If so, why? Is the council planning to declare war on someone besides the people who live here? Do they have a stock of nuclear weapons we don't know about?

I came into the world with nothing and still have most of it left..

Nothing wrong with trying to promote peace.
Not sure how successfully the city did it, or if it was just a junket excuse.

We're not a Peace Mesenger city anymore Moon. Council declined to make the £2000 contribution to the organisations running costs. Fitch was gutted because it meant fewer overseas jollies for him. He's since been booted out of office.

Brighton was declared a Peace Messenger City by the United Nations in 1986 or thereabouts. The "organisation" was the network of peace messenger city mayors or some such title, so withdrawing from that does not nullify the designation at all.

And latterly it was Keith Taylor not Brian Fitch though I can see why they could be confused as their posturing and buffoonery are so similar.

Nice idea this Peace Messenger lark but on a practical level, how many people living in Brighton & Hove noticed any benefit. Sounds like a nice all expenses paid extravaganza. Then what about all the posturing about not having it any more

The Council is one that would buy a packet with a few tomato seeds in it - for over £2 - rather than take them from inside a tomato itself for a few pence. That sums up the way it has been run. Perhaps the Conservatives will take a new approach.

I'm no garderner..... but I understand that perceived gardening wisdom is that you should probably buy a packet of quality controlled seeds in order to get the best chance of a good crop.

I've grown tomatoes both from seed packets and from seeds garnered myself from tomatoes. There is very little difference, if any.

I think still the best start is with an organic packets of seeds or an organic fruit, then you can go on with the seeds from the organic fruits.

I'll give both a try, but possibly a bit late for seeds this year?

You may well be right there Flaming pie ... Mind you, I have one spot in my garden where I've had tomatoes growing quite happily as late as early December. I suppose for this year you would have to accept starting with tomato plants. U think there is still time for those to be planted out.

We are not alone! Turns out that this piece about a "banana republic" concerns one elsewhere in Sussex.

Well ... we can't have to poor little scrotums hurt themselves while they go about vandalising the property now can we? On the other hand, it would be interesting to find out how much vandal damage the building has actually sustained since it was left empty ... it may well be that having the lights there has actually acted as a deterrent?
